The first time I ran Auchenai Crypts in Auchindoun (the instance had 2 bosses), they both dropped Spirit Shard. It can be looted by everyone in the party and it's 100% drop on each kill.

They are lootable by everyone in the party and they do have 100% drop rate. The only catch is that your faction must have control of the PVP tower objectives. This will provide you with a buff increases experience gained by 5% and allows you to collect these shards. I believe it may increase your damage output but I'm not 100% sure on that. It is applied when you enter the zone.

Every boss in the Auchindoun instances drop 2 spirit shards for each person when you have Blessing of Auchindoun. The alliance guy to had these into for items such as blue helms and epic rings is just outside the tower that at the western side of Allerian Hold in Terrokar Forest.

Man I'm so mad, these things SUCK!! I had 30, nothing here is worth anything to me, I'm 66 holy priest. the gems are lame, and the helms just don't compare to the one the eye boss in crypts drops. I bought a helm hoping maybe I could disenchant it, nope, can't sell it either. waste of time, I suggest not even looting them.

These can easily be farmed from the first boss of Mana Tombs. Each run takes about 10 minutes.

Actually probably the fastest way to farm them is to do runs of the first boss of Setthek Halls.

The runs take 15 mins but Setthek and Shad Labs bosses give 2 Spirit Shards instead of 1, so it's a quick way of grinding them if you have a group that's up for it.

We farmed the first boss in sethekk today, it took ~10 min each run with me(DPS warrior) 3 rogues and a shaman all lvl 70. Too bad that you only can reset the instance 5 times/hour

patch 2.3 - this has been fixed, just happened to our group, we barely killed Exarch, and then his avatar killed us, we ran back, killed avatar, then looted boss for a blue and the shards

So all these Shards is nothing more then currency for PvP gear, as everything has Resilence on it and all.
Basicly a PvE-char doesn't have much use for it as better items can be found throughout quests and the like?

The WoTLK version of these are Stone Keeper's Shards, which drop from Heroic instances and are awarded for Wintergrasp Quests.

Somehow, I had 4 of these before I set foot in Auchinduon. I think I got them from running CoilFang Reservoir.. so possibly they drop from bosses in other dungeons as long as the zone pvp is controlled by your faction?

these are listed in the currency converter. but when the patch came out the ones in my bags werent converted.. still there... do i have to bring them to some NPC to convert them? or just delete them

confirmed to still drop from auchindoun instances when held by your faction. And the vendor at your factions base still sells items in exchange for them.
So these haven't been affected by the cataclysm currency conversion.

It isn't completely clear from above comments about using these to buy gear to sell back to a vendor but you will have to wait 2 hours after purchasing the item to do so - trying before that will result in the vendor offering a refund of the spirit shards instead of the gold value.

Unfortunately, these items are included in the "Two hour refund" system. Why is this unfortunate? Because you need to wait two hours to sell them for gold.

I went through (Outland) too fast on other characters to have seen these before. But for a caster, the rings are not bad but the hoods are sub-par for those levels, particularly for a Holy Priest. I guess the trick would be to obtain the hood and then sell it two hours later? Kind of disappointing.

There is some obvious confusion about when these shards can be obtained. As was previously mentioned, your faction has to control the five spirit towers in the Bone Wastes to be able to collect them from the Achindoun dungeons. One person said that the status of the towers changes every six hours. This is incorrect and another person tried to correct them by saying that the towers become capturable every six hours. This is not correct either.

It works this way: When a faction captures all five towers, the faction buff becomes effective and spirit shards from the Achindoun dungeons become available to that faction. At that moment a six-hour timer starts. No one can capture the towers again until the timer runs down to zero and the words "Towers Controlled: 0" appear. Once this happens, this status remains unchanged until someone tries to capture the towers again. If no one does, the timer doesn't appear. If someone captures less than the five towers, this configuration will also remain as it is until someone else comes along and finishes the job, at which time the six-hour timer will restart.

BTW, the towers are not visible on your in-game map unless they are available for capture. In other words, you can't see them (on the map) if the timer is running. You can just barely see them on the mini-map, they are sort of light green-grey color. When they become available for capture, a little grey icon appears on the in-game map at the site of each one-it looks alot like the icon next to the timer. When one side caps a tower, it changes to that faction's color (red for Horde, blue for Alliance.)

Now with shared zones, it's possible for you to think you have control of spirit towers but not get credit for having control of them when you enter an instance. Since you may or may not be on your "home server", you may have control of them on wherever you happen to be, and not get credit for the control, since what is controlled isn't what is referenced by the instance server when it checks for actual control.

"What?"

You may be in a shared zone outside of the instance that has control of the spirit towers, but when you go inside the instance, it looks at your actual server, where you may or may not actually have control (you can't actually tell). So if you aren't getting spirit shards to drop, it's because your home server doesn't actually control the towers.

As of MoP Benedizione di Auchindoun is no longer being granted to players when their faction controls all towers, so these no longer drop.

I was just in Shadow Labyrinth and was able to get the Benedizione di Auchindoun since we owned the towers. I had the buff before I entered the Labyrinth, though it did "run out" or was removed while I was running the towers only had 11 min left on them when I entered.

Just confirmed it is still bugged. I capped all five towers, entered Shadow Labyrinth (solo) after confirming I had the buff. Killed all bosses, no spirit shard drops.

Been periodically checking ingame to see if this has been fixed and the answer is still no. Never got a ticket response, either. My only guess is that it's known, but policy forbids bug fixers from just adding more code to circumvent this without first locating whatever pre-CRZ spaghetti code gives out and removes the buff based on the objective status, and it's too obscure to bother.

Patch 7.3.5, got all spirit towers and still nothing. buff disappears once i enter the dungeons and no spirit shards drops.

The issue is because of CRZ (cross-realm zoning). Basically everyone in Terrokar Forest on dozens of servers get phased onto one server to populate it more. However, dungeons are always based on individual servers, so when you enter a dungeon you get phased back to your own. If you capture all the towers and then enter a dungeon, you go back to your own server (which is empty in Terrokar), and no longer have control of the towers. The only people who actually have access are those on the master/prime server, meaning the server that everyone is getting phased onto. For example, say several servers are being merged onto Illidan-US. Anyone on Illidan-US will be able to capture the towers and then collect shards. However, players from few dozen other servers being merged onto Illidan-US will not be able to acquire spirit shards. The only way to get them if you are not on a master server that is servers are being merged onto is if you create a character on that server and level it up and then go farm the shards. Other than that, they are unobtainable. Blizzard has not fixed this since CRZ became a thing in MoP, and I have submitted several bug reports myself. It is obviously too obscure of an issue for them to want to devote resources toward. If I ever get hired at Blizzard this will be the first thing I try to get fixed.

CRZ creates several other annoying inconveniences. Rares are harder to kill because several servers worth of players are camping them, the Gurubashi Arena chest is impossible to loot without a group of five well-geared players, and farming specific mobs for a drop is harder because there are more people farming.

I have implored Blizzard for a while to include an option to turn of CRZ in an area you have out-leveled. This way those players who are leveling or exploring will have plenty of other players to interact with while those who want to camp or farm can phase onto their own more private servers. This would fix many small bugs and make the game much more enjoyable. It may be a tiny bit more intensive to run more servers, but all the non-prime servers will have fairly low activity so shouldn't take up much space. And I think they actually still run those areas on servers anyway, even though they are unpopulated, because it is easier than writing up code to turn them off. Its such a simple solution that they could add to the drop down menu under your character icon, but Blizzard is too busy to notice the less urgent issues of the game. :(

Got an update from a GM for this issue; however is appears this will never be fixed thus making the items involved with spirit shards unobtainable.

GM Reply:

"Basically this is caused by cross-realm tech. When you see that you have the Spirit Shard buff you are on another server.

And then when you enter the dungeon you return to your server.. which does have the buff.

It's a.. unique issue to the area caused by phasing tech. It is something the Devs are aware of but not sure if it will be changed as its.. well not exactly a bug but not really ideal either.

But being old content it's likely a long time until we see an update here unfortunately."

Still unsure why they don't just implement easy quick fixes to add the buff upon entering the dungeons, similar to buffs in older raids where it gives you more HP etc. Or even easier and just make them buy able with gold but who needs logic anyway.

As of patch 8.0, spirit shards drop from the auchindoun dungeons again!

I've tested on normal and heroic and they drop on both, with around a 50% drop rate, not guaranteed but still up there! Hopefully it stays like this.

I ran it on Whisperwind-Alliance, the towers outside weren't capped for the alliance when I was outside. Didn't have a buff inside or out, but spirit shards did drop!

With 8.0, these have been changed from a physical form (that take up a slot in your bags) to now being in your currency tab.

In 8.0, these were converted into a currency rather than an item taking up bag space. You should have received a letter in your mailbox noting this if you had any in your inventory. If you open up your character info screen and look at the currency tab, you can see your spirit shard count listed under Burning Crusade.

When I ran Mana Tombs today, Yor dropped 2 spirit shards. I've done this on two toons, and got 2 each time, so hopefully he always drops 2.

Since 8.0, these have a chance to drop from bosses in the 4 Terokkar forest dungeons regardless of owning the Bone Waste towers. From a quick run through on Heroic Mana Tombs/Sethekk Halls/Auchindoun/Shadow Lab, I recieved 11 shards over 13 bosses. On normal, I received 7 over 11 bosses. This enables us to finally get their spirit shard transmogs from your faction base in Terokkar!

I'd suggest farming normal Mana tombs, as it has 3 bosses, and after the end boss you can drop down to the start and reset quickly!
