The maple seed and vial generally cost less than a single strange dust making this a cheaper and more efficient way to skill your enchanting up through the low levels.

Also, you can sell these on AH and make back some of your money you may have spent on stacks of strange dust.

If you are a lower level caster these are very nice to have. They help speed up grinding and questing -- and thus levelling.

Final note: oils are temporary enchantments to your weapon and will last through death, so you are sure to always get the full duration from your oil (as opposed to elixirs and food buffs that end upon death)

As of Patch 3.0.9 this does not apply to Heirloom weapons, specifically Dignified Headmasters Charge.

At the release of Lich King, temporary weapon enhancements (oils & stones) worked on items all the way to those requiring level 80 (I applied it to Totemic Purification Rod with no problems), this was changed by Blizzard within weeks of release. After much experimenting I found that (at version 3.0.9) the current cut off for using these is any weapon with item value of 162 (as rated in the Armory). Any weapon at or above 166 will alert the user that the attempt failed but will not consume the object. I was able to apply oil to a Levitating Dagger (BOE green) which requires level 75 to use.

If you are leveling enchanting, it is definitely worth making bottles of this wonderful stuff immediately at enchanting 45. Unlike most of the low-level enchanting products, this actually has some auctionability. The really nice part about making this to level enchanting is that it costs only 2 strange dust (+ the maple seed and the empty vial which are both very cheap), which you get from disenchanting just about everything. If you have any low level character that primarily uses spells, this is a nice little temporary weapon enchant. I use this on my low level troll discipline priest and it's a remarkably cheap way to boost some spell power for the cost. As an enchanter, if you run a lot of low level instances, you should have a lot of strange dust anyway.

I would make this stuff from 45-70 (unless there are some other enchants you want to throw on yourself along the way.) By the time you get to enchanting 70, your disenchanted loot should give you a pretty good supply of either lesser magic essence, or greater magic essence. If the Greater Magic Wand sells pretty well on your AH, or you know some players that might want one, start making some of these. This should take you through 130 without too much waste.

Unless you have trained inscription to make armor vellums or weapons vellums, this might be the only way to make some money off of leveling enchanting at low levels, and even enchanted vellums with low level enchants will be hard to sell; it's usually just a waste of a perfectly good vellum.

Currently, players are now able to apply all Wizard and Mana Oils onto their heirloom items, assuming they meet the level requirement to use said oil. This is now useful for low level casters equipped with heirloom weapons.

In my opinion, you should always use items like these. Weapon oil, sharpening stones etc. They are extremely easy to make, and reasonably cheap on the auction house, and they give such an extreme boost.

Tried this on my Bacchetta di Lilith since it goes in the main hand now but it doesn't work. Throws the error, "That item is not a valid target.

I am surprised that this does not list which bags can contain it. For F2P players, this can be a problem. The product takes up more bag space than the materials and we quickly run out of space!

As of patch 5.4 the minor wizard oil intellect buff was nerfed from +7 to +3. Why blizz would do this now is puzzling. It has been +7 as far back as I can remember and a favorite for low level caster / healers leveling their toons as well as a mainstay buff for free to play pvp'ers and level capped pvp twinks. It is still applicable to BOA weapons and can still be stacked on top of all the buffs.

For anyone wondering, none of the Wizard Oil's work with Heirloom weapons. "Target is too low level".
