Used in the quest Il tocco del Titano to upgrade 910ilvl Legendaries to 940ilvl. As told by the Community Manager Rythmor:

Since the release of Patch 7.1.5, we've received a number of questions relating to the Nighthold Legendary item upgrades and how that process will work. We'd like to provide some clarity on what you can expect next week.

When the Nighthold opens next week, players who have acquired at least one Legion Legendary item will find a quest in Dalaran to upgrade a Legendary from item level 910 to 940. This quest involves collecting a number of Essences of Aman’thul, which can be found in the following locations:

Nighthold Raid Bosses
Weekly Mythic Keystone Cache
Emissary Bags
PvP Weekly Quests

Once you have completed the quest, you'll be given a Distilled Titan Essence, which can be consumed to upgrade a Legion Legendary item to level 940. The quest is repeatable, so you'll be able to earn as many Distilled Titan Essences as you need to upgrade any Legendaries you have.

Additionally, once the Nighthold is open, any new Legendaries you discover will already be item level 940. Note that this does not apply retroactively to Emissary Bags that you may already have in your inventory when the time comes. Only new bags earned after the Nighthold is open have the chance to reward an item level 940 Legendary.

Will it be available on all levels of NH?
These will drop in all difficulties of the Nighthold, LFR included.

How many of these are needed for the quest?

People are just starting to obtain these, but it looks like it will not take that much time to complete:

Emisarry Cache: 1-5
Weekly M+ Chest: 15
NH Raid Bosses: 1-5
PvP Weekly Quest: 5 per bracket

Assuming an average of 3 from each emissary, you get 21 per week + 15 from weekly chest = 36. If each NH boss drops 2, you should be able to upgrade a legendary per week.

Edit: New numbers seem to suggest that it's 1-5 per NH boss and 1-5 per Emissary, an average of 2.5. No news about higher difficulties dropping more.

Starting January 17, 2016 (January 18th for EU) with the release of Nighthold, these are obtained with the following quantities inside applicable sources to upgrade Legendary items obtained since Legion launch to ilvl 910 to 940. It is possible to upgrade a legendary within a week.

Once you complete the Il tocco del Titano quest once located at the Blacksmith building in Dalaran, the quest is immediately repeatable (Extra essences that bring you over 50 are not retained).

I have included suspected possible tiers and will assimilate them if the values are equal.

Nighthold Bosses - Bosses are loot locked, meaning you get essences from each unique boss each week

All difficulties - 1-3

Emissary Bags -

World Quest - 2 to 4

Mythic+ Weekly Cache -

2+ - 15

PvP Weekly Quests (10 wins in 2s, 3s or 3 wins in RBG)

2s - 5
3s - 5
RBGs - 5

FYI - If you haven't accepted the quest, and perform actions that earn these, they will be an item in your bags, that CAN be deleted.

However, if you are on the quest, it becomes a "hidden quest item", and future collected ones do not appear.

Currently have a ticket in, since I didn't realize what they were and deleted 15 of them.

Just an FYI. You still recieve these even if you havent started the quest, theyre just a useless currency. Once you start the quest, they will be removed from your bags and applied toward your quest.

Ingame tooltip says 50 on a stack, with one stack max. Not 200.

This kind of garbage is the exact reason I unsub. I have 5 legendary items. So I have to farm 250 of these stupid items that shouldn't exist. Thank you so much blizzard for making me work even harder for the stuff that I already worked for that other people get for free if only legendary drops post 1-17-17.

It appears that you can only loot Essences from bosses in NH once per week, regardless of difficulty.

Cleared NH Normal in one night, went back and did a few bosses on heroic the next night - no new essences. However, Nightshards do not seem to be held to this rule.

This may seem obvious, but these do not drop if you do not have a legendary item. Nothing like being punished for bad RNG luck.

You can only loot them once per boss, regardless of difficulty.

Any fragments above 50 will be lost. So be mindful of that when you open your weekly cache

This morning in response to my second ticket a GM provided the 15 essences I didn't get from opening the weekly mythic+ chest before they hotfixed them to work properly. I can't promise this will be the case for everyone who tickets them however.

WARNING: Any Essence of Aman'Thul above 50 is currently lost on quest turn-in.

In addition, these Quest Items are also lost entirely on Faction Change and then cannot be restored by Blizzard GMs.

So i did Nighthold LFR today and here are the results:
1st boss = 1 essence
2nd boss = 2 essences
3rd boss = 3 essences
Total = 6 essences from 3 LFR bosses

"Weekly PvP Quest" expression might lead to a misunderstanding for people.

You don't actually do a "Quest". You just need to win 10 matches in 2v2/3v3 Arenas or win 3 RBGs to get 5 essences.

So, I had 2 legendaries at 910, repeated the quest twice and upgraded them both. If each new legendary I obtain will already be at 940, why do the essences still drop?

Will there be some application for them in the future? Obviously the quest is still repeatable, I'm just wondering if there is any value in repeating it post upgrading all 910 gear...
