I got this on my mage and so far I am very underwhelmed. It's of course very early and I need to use it more to pass any significant judgement, but either the proc rate is very low or the range/angle/etc is wonky and doesn't hit often. Just my initial opinion.

2 Minutes 27.93 seconds on LFR Ursoc. Standing decently far back (Balance druid; 45 yd max range) and this trinket did 0 damage the entire fight. So it has a dumb ICD or a small range. It could be useful in very lucky and niche situations (Such as a tight stack of adds directly in front of you). Garbage over all.

The proc seems to have a max range of 20 yards. Even though it got a 40% buff to its damage, this mechanic makes it quite useless in raiding.
- It's horrendous at single-target, producing 0 dps if you are 21 yards away - or if your character is slightly facing to the side of the boss' hitbox.
- For bosses with adds, consider that its 1.5 RPPM makes it hard to proc during short add phases.
- In council type fights, this might find a niche, but it's likely not even good there.

For Mythic+ this trinket is interesting, as it might allow you to dot things up while the tank is rounding up mobs. But even there, you'll likely to want to keep yourself at a distance due to mob abilities, volcanic or aggro.

A few notes.

1. It is comparable to other AoE trinkets, but the application of the proc is terrible (see other comments)
2. It is shadow damage which scales with Shadow Priest Shadow/Voidforms and rank 35 and above artifact traits.
3. Almost exclusively a Mythic+ trinket and even then there are better options.

Warlock affliction on an Eye of Azshara +10 using the Icon of Rot ilvl 905. It dealt 22.5m damage overall and was responsible for 4.3% of all damage. This trinket is simply amazing and I don't know what the other comments are about, it makes no sense compared to my numbers.

Ok I am writing this to correct some mis-information in the other comments. This is either because the item was significantly changed in patch 7.1.5, or because the people commenting did not do enough testing.

I tested this item over the course of 60 minutes on my BM hunter, standing at max (40 yards) range, just auto-shotting and letting pet and Hati attack to give some idea of the value of the proc (note - I am only discussing the proc, not the crit value for your class).

I tested this with Titanforged item level 900 version of the trinket which dropped out of the weekly cache from completing Mythic +7. The stats on it were:

+1180 Crit
+531 Avoidance
Equip: Your ranged attacks and spells have a chance to unleash a carrion swarm to infect all enemies in a line in front of you, dealing 341,100 Shadow damage over 8 seconds.

My hunter’s average gear level was i869. My pet was Tenacity Spec.

There were numerous occasions during the hour where the trinket proc’d 2 and even 3 times in a row, with no internal cooldown, although it never overlapped itself. The damage applied every 2 seconds for 8 seconds, and did not crit. It worked fine from 40 yards. I tested it on a single target and 3 targets to get the results recorded below, but the proc applies to ALL targets in a straight line in front of me. This SIGNIFICANTLY increased the damage value of the trinket.

TLDR: No internal cooldown, Average proc 1.64 ppm, Damage of i900 trinket over 1 hr (34.92M) equivalent to Autoshot of ilvl 869 BM hunter (33.86M) on a single target, significantly more for every added target it affects.

In my opinion, then, this is a very decent DPS trinket.

In 7.2 this item becomes a bit more useful, especially for ranged. Its (unofficial) range as of patch 7.2 is now ~45 yards. (Will try to update once we have an official range number.) This change (at the time of writing) is not listed in the 7.2 patch notes, but as its previous range was only 20 yards, it made it quite difficult to use properly.

Opinion/Tips: While the trinket does say "out in a LINE on front of you," when one thinks of carrion swarm, if you are familiar with WoW or other Warcraft games, Carrion Swarm is typically used by Dreadlord type enemies and deals damage in a large cone (it would make sense that this item would drop from Tichondrius). However this trinket does not do that. It deals damage in a straight line from the direction your character is facing. So if you are having to move for a boss mechanic, and having no idea when the instant effect will actually proc, it is very often wasted.

With the new increased range, its possible that this trinket will still be lackluster, but at least becomes more mechanically viable especially on limited movement fights.

Did some testing today (patch 7.2) on dummies and later on bears.

First of all, proc animation of green cloud going toward targets did play only when testing on dummies, so assume that proc animation might not show most of the time. Still, regardless of animation, it always played it's proc sound.

When testing, swarm always headed toward my target, so direction character was facing did not matter. Still, can't say it'll work same for spells that can be cast on targets behind caster

Biggest issue I have noticed is that it takes roughly 5 seconds from it's proc for it to actually start dealing damage. It procs, sound and animation plays out, fades, and only short while after this, DoT is actually applied to target. Which makes it very unreliable, as it needs enemies to live for ~13 seconds after proccing to deal full damage.
I have tried to use that delay to kite bears out of area of effect but failed. Which means that either area extends fair bit to the sides/back, or that it applies some sort of tracking invisible debuff instantly. Testing on dummies suggest second option.
