OLD SPECULATIONS:

-I've seen people speculating about . I myself dont know much about him yet but I'm about to join the discord group to find out more. (As soon as i find the right one..)

-The memory of arthas found on the broken isles. There is definitely something with his phrases. Why put so much effort for just a bit of artifact power.

-Stormheim. Maybe its STILL hidden in stormheim. Think about it, vikings used runes as well. Maybe it has something to do with the val'kyr/vry'kul. Hidden in a tomb or something. (Possibly ?)

-The phrase 'no living soul remembers' indicates that nothing alive knows it. So if we have to find and talk to an NPC it's most likely a ghost or something.

-Skaggldrynk, a friend of mine came with the idea but i also noticed someone below mentioned it. I doubt it but its not impossible.
The potions are quite expensive and with low quantity on the AH. Both expensive and rather painful to test. Since the effect only lasts for 18 seconds and it could be used through the entirety of Azeroth.

-I dont know if ALL raid bosses were available (i've read something about limited content) but if it was limited either Tichondrius or Gul'dan seems Obvious to drop it.

-As stated by MikeTsa7 below: I'm currently trying to find Chiave dell'Accademia di Nar'thalas, I doubt we will get it there because someone would've found it but it is quite interesting. (I did not get the key this week. Now I have to wait a few weeks for the next quest >_>

THINGS WE CAN RULE OUT

-Legion bosses/rares, otherwise someone would've already found it.
-Quests, if looking at all the in legion added quests, for DK's only (if other classes could do the quest it wouldnt make sense) nothing points at a quest related to this item.
-Class hall, again someone would've found it.
-Random legion loot, again someone would've found it.

Places I've visited to check for clues and nothing found:
All 3 Stratholme instances, Ulduar, ICC, Old Ebon Hold and the lands around it, Invincible's grave, (I think) every tomb/graveyard in stormheim (Yes also Shield's Rest), Terenas's grave, Naxxramas, Shadowmoon Burial Grounds.

Northrend in general: I dont think we'll find anything there because the timelines dont add up. It's still End WotLK there.

MORE INFO

Looking at the artifact calculator today I noticed the blue and green version have been switched. Meaning that we would find the green one first. I dont know if this is a WoWHead bug or if it's supposed to be like this. If it's not a bug I think we need to look near fel infected area's with the legion's armies. NOT something related to arthas/frosty things.

The icon is from an offhand wapon from Dragon Soul Pergamena dei Rituali Ripugnanti If it's from a lootable object it might have the same model.
Looking at the runes of the offhand/icon, it doesnt seem to be connected to the stormheim vikings since the runes dont match. Therefore opening a whole new perspective of possible locations to find this.

I've also been digging in WoWHead for ALL added chests, books, containers and out of place items.
The only thing I found was Pietra Runica Misteriosa, but I don't think it's related to our frost DK item.
I dont think it will drop directly from old content bosses. Since that would be unfair in comparison to the other classes.
However, I do think something might be triggered in old content if you walk in with the blades. Or something drops that will start a quest or something else triggers an event.

If anyone SEEN someone with this skin in general please do comment this. With only 1 or 2 other undiscovered appearances left i really, really hope that its not a drop from the Nighthold. Otherwise we're just getting screwed over.(##RESPBREAK##)2##DELIM##Sas148##DELIM##

Hello today im want to present my theory about this skin and where is can be. While searching suramar im found strange cave its realy hidden and you can not just go in there. So on the road from stormheim to suramar you can see first pink three on your right on 33.73, 76.14 . Behind the tree cave and there boss Kangaxx. He really fatty and hits so hard aoe, well kill him its not easy goal. Important part its the ghost that mean "no living soul" like lich king or some like that. Way to get there its use Idolo di Alzabrul and Aquilone dei Corno Celeste di Piume di Grifalco (or something like this). And heres the problem im just cant to get the people for kill this hard boss maybe someone here want to be samaritan and organise raid.

I really think these are in Maw of Souls. There is "no living soul" there and I was running it on heroic and there was text in the general chat that said "The captured vrykul dies and is absorbed into the maw of souls". Can anyone confirm this? I feel like it is on a timer to save the captured vrykul.

I've got an idea, but i think someone must have tried this already by now.
If not, this maybe something. When i read the text, the words "no living soul remembers" hints towards something that has died obviously. So why not try to search as a dead ghost. Maybe we get/see a quest/item/npc somewhere that we would not see if we were alive. And Stormheim would probaly be a good area to start searching.
I think we can safely assume it's not a drop from a raid/dungeon/world boss this would have been found by now. Anything related to class order hall would also have been found by now. So i think we have to try searching in different ways, like as a ghost. I will try this out myself tonight, will let you know if i find anything.

I was think that because its an ancient language it may be linked to the black empire and maybe Yogg-Saron drops the item because he is the lord of death. this is just a thought and may be very off

Darkening = black = black empire

Edit: Also the main blade looks like its made out of sarontite which is the blood of Yogg-Saron

I've been reading how some other classes/specs have to go into old world dungeons etc. as part of their hidden skin. Anyone tried exploring stuff like that? Frostmourne's cave in Dragonblight or Stratholme could be where Arthas was "darkened." Maybe the CoT Stratholme? Last place like that I could think of is perhaps somewhere in Scholo, especially in one of Darkmaster Gandling's rooms at the end. I'm at work right now but may try exploring those places tonight.

Since so many options have been tried by so many and nobody's found the appearance yet, i must atleast ask - has anyone checked Shield's Rest, the island northeast of Stormheim? It's a group zone, very difficult to solo, and it also seems to hold many secrets, most definitely related to runes and ancient things. I haven't been able to gather a group yet, so if anyone knows anything interesting about the island, i believe many of us would want to know.

Just some (probably) useless thoughts here:

Maybe the skin itself is a clue? The floating skull in the hilt is somewhat reminiscent of corrupted Ashbringer. It's a runeblade, but has a fel glow to it. The spikes at the bottom of the blade look like they belong to something out of Ulduar or Siege of Orgrimmar, although I doubt that's any kind of hint.

"Written in an ancient language that no living soul remembers,..."

This can mean two things: No one alive knows the language, or no one alive remembers the language. Small distinction with huge implication though. If no one remembers the language, but once knew it, that means we can date the language within the past 13,000 years, or belonging to immortal beings such as old gods, titans, and demons. If no one alive ever knew the language, it may point to another planet entirely - Draenor/Outland, or some world conquered by the legion (but probably not Argus).

I think this is an interesting thing to note. Remember what the blades of the fallen prince are - they're the shards of Frostmourne, a sword that contained thousands of souls, but most notably, the souls of Arthas and Nerzhul. Arthas was never the brightest candle on the shelf, so I think it's safe to say he wasn't that linguistically talented, but Ner'zhul on the other hand - definitely not a living soul, and almost certainly on some level, a companion to the wielder of the blades. So in conclusion, I think it's safe to say Ner'zhul is the reader of the language. That, however, tells us nothing about the location of these runes, unfortunately.

I think our biggest clue is the fact that these runes are old - very old. While they're probably in some unreleased content due to a Blizzard screw-up or general unfairness, I am thinking that if there is a clue to be found in this item description, then those clues point to a mechanic to unearth ancient antiquities. Yep... archaeology.

The thing is, which Nightfallen have this item in his list? Because Thalyrssa doesn't have it, so there must be another seller in Suramar who gives this at Revered.

Could this be related to Xavius? He has the spell Oscuramento Anima and he also drops a trinket that has a similar "Darkening" effect Statuetta Grottesca.

Could it have something to do with the legion invis potion Skaggldrynk? It says it makes you enter the spirit realm, making you invisible, so it might make some things visible (Such as the seal to open a door in vault of the wardens for the alchemy quest)

Has anyone tried to use one and explore some zones related to DKs, yogg saron, kharazan catacombs etc while under its effects?

Hello,

I have an... strange feeling about this one. When the weapons were announced, some players (including myself) asked what will happen with Shadowmourne.

For those who are not familiar - Shadowmourne is Two handed legendary axe, that is reeking of DK mythos and lore - it was a weapon created to challenge Frostmourne.... To my knowledge, blizz never did address it. At this moment i am at 35/50 shards, and I want to ask if any DK that has earned it, has tried to interact with it somehow on the Broken Isles, or if they have visited ICC after they get the "true end" of Arthas?

I think, that maybe a new interaction was added, and considering that name of Shadowmourne... Maybe this is our way out.

The name kind of points me towards shadowmoon burial grounds. Weren't there dark runes on the floor scattered about the instance near the first boss?

Really that's all I can think of in addition to what's already been said. Anyone willing to check it out?

Quick edit, there is a world quest called Dark Runes in Stormheim. You have to go to Haustvald and destroy Dark Runes. I wonder if maybe the hidden artifact item is here and/or in the Maw of Souls.

I gotta add, after some serious thinking. I've spendt alot of hours searching and the only thing I've "noticed" is that the appearance is familiar, especially the spikes around the handle. Naga like. Even though the whole blade gives me a Demon vibe. The whole thing looks like a demon blade. Even considered without the color. So with that said. Something just hit me 2 minutes ago, which is: "Written in an ancient language that no living soul remembers, yet somehow the words leap to your tongue, yearning to be read."

"Ancient Language;" Means it's an old language.
"No living soul;" Means that we're looking for someone that is dead.

With that said, I dont think we necessarily have to look in just Surumar and if we do, we got to find out an way that seems like a more probable way to speak with some one that died ages ago.

When I think of Ancient: I think of battle of the ancients ofc. That was elfs. This whole place is Nelfs.

We are looking for a place that might be in ruins, perhaps just that. Maby a burial site? Perhaps an old city? Or a haunted place.
Thats just my opinion, my thought on the matter. Happy hunting!

Or is it just so easy that the no living soul that can read it lives within our blade and that the item is just an clickable item somewhere in some ruin in Surumar and then the fifth Arthas will pop up.

Edited: I HIGHLY doubt that you need to go off content for this. Every other class/spec that has been found has not left the legion content. So the chances would be VERY slim to find something outside of Legion.

So I've just finished talking to arthas around the broken isles, here's what he says:

"You believe that you are in control, that your will is your own... Yet you do as he commands. You exist by his will alone. You imagine yourself to be free, but you will always be his instrument"

"See the spirits writhe and twist... The numberless shades forsaken by time. The dead outnumber the living, and always will."

"The darkness does not die, Fellarg. rage against the Nightmare. Struggle as you will. The infinite dark is patient. we will all be claimed in the end"

"So many fallen kings, silent in their numberless graves... Even the mighty are rendered nameless by time. Every king must kneel before death."

I feel like this would be a clue, seems like a lot of work for it to be just for some artifact power.

I spent a bit wandering around the depths of wowhead and wowwiki, trying to figure out what may be related to this, and I found something that might actually be so!

According to this quest's text, Koltira Deathweaver is one of the few who is known to be able to translate the 'Language of Death', a language no Living soul remembers.

Guess who is one of our followers in our order hall?

It's worth noting that that quest is Horde only. The alliance counterpart is ->this Quest<- which may also be worth looking into for the same reason.

Either way, I suspect we still need something to translate first... No telling what.

Between Arthas' lines about fallen kings and the fact that the skin looks strikingly similar to the Red Sword of Courage / Ymiron's Blade there could definitely be a tie in to Ymiron.

OK since everyone's throwing ideas, here's one that I came up with.

The day I read the item's text I happened to be doing the Nar'thalas Academy quests in Azsuna, so I thought to myself, hey that place is a Harry Potter reference and parcel-tongue is kinda similar to the description and if that was spoken from the ghosts there technically they're not living souls.

Then I stumbled upon an archaeology find, the Key to Nar'thalas Academy Chiave dell'Accademia di Nar'thalas which unlocks more challenges with runes and has harder versions of the mini bosses summoned from the books.

So maybe as a dk after finding this archaeology rare and complete your studies on runes you can read/find it as a drop from the mini bosses that spawn from researching the books there?

Can anyone give some sort of source to Blizzard stating they wouldn't hide anything in old content? just so we can rule that out, it would help a lot and I can't seem to find anything myself about it and most of the places i can think of are in old content places

Things I've checked :
-I've checked under ICC where you used to have to go to make Ebon Weave; nothing down there. Was thinking maybe the spirit of the boy down there would possibly say something to the wielder of the sword(s) that took his life. Nothing.

- Halls of Reflection's "Sword's Rest" pedestal, nothing happens.

- Cleared Heroic Scholomance with nothing new or out of place

- On a whim I checked using the Schools of Arcane Mastery to check out Vargoth's hidden room in Dalaran, looking to see if he had a scroll tucked away or something. No luck.

Edit :
Checked Scholomance at the circle of skeletons in the room before the Lillian fight using a Skaggldrynk; no luck. Also tried to see if the filled-in staircase before the first boss (which used to be open) was a hidden spot, also with a Skaggldrynk. No luck there either.

Okey so another thought I have. Perhaps there's an npc somewhere in Surumar. In a cave/ruin/demon. Which you need to be dead to talk with? A spirit may be able to see and speak with an unliving.

I searched the Frost Deathknight from the Questchain in Icecrown "Sapph"
I visited Well of Eternity Instance
I visited the 3 ICC Instances
I searched for long hours in Icecrown, nothing yet, but not sure about the bones you needed to collect back in WOTLK
I tried to look under the new position of the order hall
I tried looking very far south from there (there was a planned area, but cancelled (Thal'Dranath))
I tried Looking in the cave in Northrend where Arthas found Frostmourne and Wounded Muradin
I tried Stormpeaks (The Alliance City with Muradin) but it's Alliance only wasn't expecting much
Hrothgars Landing seems empty, too

Going to try:
Icc Raid (yeah i know some people checked it but 2 more eyes you know) same for Ulduar

I really think now, it is on the broken isles, but maybe in a Raid, or the Tier 2 upgrade orderhall like Druid and Monk
Maybe a very hidden spot as the ones from kosumoth's balls...doesn't sound right :D

I was under ICC in this Long cave with Arthas as Child as Ghost, there are some of Yogg'Saron's "followers" -> the faceless but i haven't found anything, maybe you need to die there, but don't know how.

Okay, so for the ancient language, people have been talking about Elves, but what about what they descended from? Trolls are older than any other living race on Azeroth other than maybe minions of the Old Gods. Also, another thing to consider is how it says "yet somehow the words leap to your tongue, yearning to be read." makes me think of the creators of the blade Frostmourne, the Nath'rezim, aka Dreadlords. So maybe it has something to do with Dreadlords and demonic runes.

Have a feeling that both the frost and unholy hidden appearances are tied to which tier 5 order hall perk you choose, reanimation for unholy and frostwyrm for frost.

Hope I'm wrong, not only would it be a boring way to get it (unless it yielded an item to start a quest) but it would force you to choose only one appearance to pursue and possibly a less useful trait.

I think this item has something to do with Tichondrius. He was the dreadlord that guided arthas for some time and he's making a reappearance in the suramar raid. His full title is Tichondrius the Darkener.

People are fairly certain that these hidden appearances are all available in 7.0.3 so I'm not sure what in game may have a connection to Tichnodrius... Maybe others can look into it?

I have scoured Haustvald in Stormheim as well as the instanced version of Helheim that is accessible through a portal there. I have not found anything related to this hidden artifact appearance as of yet. The only thing I noticed is that when I used "/kneel" at Helya she seemed to move. I think it's irrelevant, but it was the only noteworthy thing I noticed. We can stratch those locations off.

I find it hard to believe that Blizzard would bar off the hidden artifact appearances for the DPS specs. Maybe one or the other, but not both. And considering the Blood artifact appearance is just based off RNG with the last Suramar withered army training chest, I expect both these weapons will have certain puzzles and requirements to be met, sort of like how the Corrupted Ashbringer requirements are.

However, it is disheartening that no one, even in beta, has yet found anything noteworthy. Nothing datamined, no clues, just the item itself with a little quote.

I have got this itching feeling that it might have to do with the 4 Memories of Arthas, as well as the hidden ability where if you idle long enough an ice patch forms under you, and when you move it breaks.

I've been going through lore of Bolvar, Arthas, Uther, King Terenas, and several other noteworthy figures that are connected to the Scourge, including Old God lore. I am getting nothing that would lead me to anything related to this item that unlocks the appearance. Either we're missing a piece of the puzzle, or Blizzard truly hasn't released the requirements to unlock this appearance yet.

I'd really hate it if this just happened to become a raid drop. However, I think it's unlikely since no one got it during beta testing. I could be wrong, but the fact remains it's never been seen on beta or on live servers as of writing this comment.

I'd really hate to have to wait until 7.1 in order to unlock it. I'd be fine if it unlocked with the raid tiers or if it came along somehow with mythic+ dungeons. But waiting being the primary reason for why we can't find anything about this appearance is just sad. I'm super in Scourge and Death Knight lore, yet I can't find any leads.

If anyone has any progress or updates, or if you find anyone with this weapon appearance, let everyone else know and interrogate the person who has it, but nicely so we don't scare them away.

Tichondrius l'Oscuratore

Given the look of skin(kinda demonic remincent of the corrupted ashbringer), the name of the item and the idea that the nathrezim are an old race makes me think that this may be tied to either the existing NPC on the broken shore, or based on the raid boss in nighthold.

I think im gonna go check Yogg'Saron since he says bow down to the God of Death. And also it's been hinted that he corrupted Arthas. Not sure where but there's text from something Old God related talking about Arthas saying "he will learn that no king rules forever" and then bam "Terenas" says that exact same thing. Also Arthas' memories on the Broken Isles all appear to refer to Old Gods. For example "You exist by his will alone. You imagine yourself to be free, but you will always be his instrument" "Every King must kneel before death. The darkness does not die" "Rage against the nightmare, struggle as you will (remember Yogg Saron encounter "I am the lucid dream, the monster in your nightmares"). The infinite dark is patient, we will all be claimed in the end." and finally "You believe that you are in control, that your will is your own, yet you do as he commands".

Given that there is speculation that Yogg'Saron affected Arthas somehow, my theory is this:

Frostmourne and the armor the lich king wears (which is forged by saronite AKA blood of the old gods) was just chilling in northrend for i dont know how long until Arthas picked it all up, would it not be logical to think that Yogg'Saron infected the sword and armor somehow with his presence which would make Arthas unwittingly do what the Old God is telling him to do? And if that is the case, then us using the twinblades, which are forged by the same sword used by Arthas, would still have that link to Yogg'Saron whom by the way is not dead (it is explained that old gods can not truly die, they are outside the cycle). So in conclusion, I believe we are somehow unwittingly doing Yogg'Sarons bidding and that we may find the hidden artifact in some manner that has to do with him.

I saw someone on the unholy hidden item mention this there is a hidden achievement for unholy but there is also one for for frost he also mentioned a addon called Overachiever that lets you track these hidden achievements not only are these achievements but they also are part of a meta achievement called "honoring the past" currently I have the blood and unholy done blood is for casting consumption 1000 times and unholy is for summoning 2000 ghouls (I made a macro that just dismisses pet took the talent that made summon ghoul have no cd and spammed the macro and summon). I'm wondering if anyone here has or knows how to get the frost one maybe unlocking them all unlocks something? The frost one doesn't have any data its just a achievement that has nothing written about it.

I think we're looking at this all wrong.

First off, we're looking at an item that hasn't been found in game yet, and trying to base it's location from it. I.E. "Written in an ancient language that no living being knows"....we haven't even -found- an idea of where it's at, we can't base our search upon the idea of a datamined item. While -this- is the item we need to actually get the skin (once acquired, then use it, bam skin acquired), I think the search for it based on it's flavor text is a serious error.

Secondly, after looking over the Memories of Arthas, and the location they're at, they're rather ambiguous. If you consider the locations in which the memories are found at, they can relate to the words in which he's speaking. While I don't want to say "This disproves it entirely", I think the idea of where it's at falls not only with what he says, but also within the Artifact Knowledge research done.

I've essentially tried to keep quiet about it because I wanted the satisfaction to know I completed something on my own, but more and more I've delved into this, the more I've come to terms that a group effort -is- best.

My theory thus far:

We have to walk the path of Arthas. His landing on Northrend, finding of Frostmourne, then traversing back to Lordaeron, and travelling through Western/Eastern Plaguelands, and so on and so forth.

I think there's something missing as a whole though, to even -think- or act on this, we'd need to get some sort of quest to kick start it. That's the kicker. The how is what's eluding the DK community as a whole.

I'm just putting my two cents out here, and say what if this appearance is not in Northrend, but maybe in Outland or Draenor?

Think about it.

Demons and warlock classes are/were capable of speaking demonic, which is a language that only they could use. And demons sometimes take living souls when they slay their enemies. And there are a few demons I believe that can/have runes for rituals and whatnot. So maybe it could be found in Black Temple?

Also, isn't it just a LITTLE fishy that the weapon appearance looks to be more demonic than undead?

As for Draenor, there could be a couple places, like Shadowmoon Valley or Highmaul, maybe it could be in Shadowmoon Burial Grounds because it is full of runes and ghosts. Highmaul is another possibility because the Ogres there use magic and runes, another possible location?

Might as well start searching!

I do believe I might have something that can help in the search however I'm not 100% positive and from doing some research and seeing what people have been coming up with I haven't seen this piece of information.

After seeing someones idea on reliving the path of Arthas and his journey to become the Lich King I began to think of people who might have accompanied him or he encountered. The top choices would be Jaina and Sylvanas. However there is one person who might have been overlooked, Muradin bronzebeard. He was the person who did read the curse on the dais of frostmourne and according to WoWiki he can read the language of the elements.

So I decided to go visit him in Iron Forge on which I got this comment: "Muradin bronzebeard: What is this blasphemy, character name? How dare you reforge that cursed blade, the very sword that damned Lordaeron and its prince? I warned Arthas not to touch Frostmourne, and now I'm warning you: cast those things into the sea before they damn us all.

Now personally I'm not sure what this could mean and it could be easily debunked due it being in an alliance area unless the horde have the same interaction with a different leader.

Maybe we might need to go places that revolve around water, maybe vashj'ir but in terms of lore wise why would something related to a deathknight be hidden in the depths of the ocean?

Anyway hope this can help out in someway and since I haven't seen this in my search I thought it would be worth mentioning.

EDIT: Apparently, it seems that people don't seem to understand my point here, so I'll go into further detail. Notice how the book's flavor text describes the fall of the northern area of the Eastern Kingdoms, and from what we know about the scourge's invasion of Lordaeron is that it was lead by Arthas (who wielded Frostmourne at the time), so this can give us an idea of where the artifact skin could be. So far, we have a few locations to search for.

So a few possible locations that contain undead are:
Hillsbrad Foothills
Silverpine Forest
Gilneas
Tirisfal Glades
The Hinterlands
Eastern and Western Plaguelands
The Ghostlands
Eversong Woods
And finally the Isle of Quel'Danas (with a possibility of being in the Sunwell raid or Dungeon)

Also, I have scoured through every nook and cranny in the Culling of Stratholme dungeon (which is located in the Caverns of Time) searching for anything hidden or secretive and found nothing, but I did notice that after defeating Mal'Ganis, there was a chest called Cassa Runica Scura and thought it could drop in that chest, although it is probably unlikely that it is the case. I haven't tried the Vanilla version of Stratholme, but I will look there for anything interactive.

I highly doubt that the hidden appearance would be in the Maw of Souls. And as for people thinking that a certain vrykul is connected to this, I highly doubt it since he is just related to an achievement in the dungeon.

The Dreadlord leader Tichondrius is known in many circles as "The Darkener".

Given the connection to runic magic, it's entirely possible that one of the steps towards collecting it involves the elven ghosts of Azsuna and Suramar.
Or, that it involves the Vrykul of Stormheim, since they specialize in runic magic and are feet away from a Goddess of Death every day.

Someone on Reddit said they they used death gate from within Lights Hope Chapel and instead of taking them to Ebon Hold it took them to a grave yard in Dragonblight near Light's Trust. They tried to replicate it but they couldn't. I decided to try to replicate it myself so I went to Lights Hope and used death gate from inside of the chapel, I placed it on the stairs in front of the large stained glass window, and instead of going to Ebon Hold it took me to 63.5,51.1 in Val'Sharah right on the coast line across from an undead war ship. I'll have to go back and try it again to see if it will take me anywhere else.

Just completed the quests given out by Feronas Granvizio which allow you to relive the memories of Illidan. Since there seems to be so many links to Tichondrius, I decided to give it a try. However, there is no special dialog or interactions, a dead end.

This means that we, the FDK community may need to revisit some old locations after this level is acquired. To my knowledge, one of the milestones is completing the quest "In my father's house" from your class hall. Good luck with the hunt and stay frosty.

I have an idea, no physical evidence but just a thought that came into my head. Who else is tied to the story of the lich king? What other character is involved that nobody is thinking about? Ner'Zhul? Why did everyone forget him? He seemed to be dealing with ancient magics that had been hidden and lost forever in his burial grounds.

The revenant says:

My idea is this, what about Black Rook hold? i know the raid isn't out yet but has anyone really checked the place over?

1. The ghosts believe they're fighting for their King, but they are fighting for Gul'dan who raised their King and made him a slave.

2. Your first introduction to Black Rook is the graveyard, swarming with dead spirits, the whole bloody place is full of waking spirits.

3. "The darkness does not die" i mean its thin, but it IS BLACK rook hold? "rage against the nightmare" Val'sharah is where you fight the nightmare thats poisoning the emerald dream.

and 4. You do hear an awful lot about the once great king of Black rook who was raised by Gul'dan.

Idk, it may be a little thin in places but it seems it would be worth checking into.

Hey all. I've been looking around Azeroth for a while for these Runes, but I've come up on dead ends.

-The Scarlet Monastery seems to be completely out. Nothing in there points to any sort of Runes.

- Scholomance had nothing

So then I figured, Maybe the very, VERY first Death Knight might have something. So I headed out to the Black Temple and had a little chat with Teron Gorefiend. Sadly, he didn't have anything pointing towards this. I have also tried Utgarde Pinnacle, Ajol'Nerub, and An'Kahet, but I've been unable to find anything there.

Just trying to help rule out some possibilities. :)

So last night I hit AP5 and I figured it'd be a good idea to check areas that are significant to the Frostmourne story. Not much luck though.

Areas I've checked.

The cave of Frostmourne within Dragonblight. Nothing there

The Throneroom of Lorderan, again no luck.

I killed Dar'Khan Drathir in The Ghost lands who died to Arthas in his book.

I ran down the Dead Scar, Still nothing.

Then I tried the Halls of Reflection. Nothing special there either.

Any other ideas?

Okay. So I've test a LOT of the same things here. Its been slightly maddening looking for possible clues.
I asked my wife, who is also a wow player, but much better at riddles and word play, to look at the memories as possible clues.
I believe they are the key to finding the frost spec "start" to receiving the skin.
By the logic I am going off of:

- The memories are the key to get started.
- It is almost certainly tied to AK level.

Since we have had no real progress, and this search seems largely fragmented, I'm putting this out there.
- Each of the quotes could at least loosely be attributed to one of the instances in the zone memories are in.
- DK's are the anti-paladin. My guess is that while their questline is likely very different... the "frostmourne-esque" and Ashbringer skins have similar AK requirements... this puts us at a deficit and I'd love for a PTR level 12+ Frost DK with significant points in their weapon to look into this and post about it.
- We would be looking for an emote or small items in each of the dungeons: BRH, Neltharions Lair, Halls of valor(only place with a crap-load of forgotten kings, aside the Nameless King area), and DHT, on any difficulty, but harder is better.
I am checking myself but I am currently AK level 5... would like to get more eyes on it at higher levels.

As for the appearance... it looks like a "scourged/demonic" viking runeblade. (Ymiron)
Rune darkening and darkened runes etc seem to be popular with corrupted vrykul for some damned reason...

The HE we serve: just guesses.

Just putting it out there, purely based on the referencing of 'Darkening' and the idea of a dead language, that the master Dreadlord Tichondrius the Darkener is a boss in the Nighthold. The Nathrezim language is described as being used only by the Dreadlords themselves on their homeworld, at least according to the Illidan novel.

Both this appearance and the unusued Destro Warlock one make reference to 'Darkener'/'Darkening'. The Dreadlords were closely related to Frostmourne's origins as they were the original jailors of the Lich King.

So my money's on this being a drop from Tichondrius when Nighthold goes live.

So this may seem silly, but has anyone tried Ner'zhul in Shadowmoon Burial Grounds? Ner'zhul was the first and original Lich King, which may justify his use of "Him" and "He" as he was Arthas's predecessor to the throne. And given that in that era Ner'zhul is still alive, he may have something that doesn't have in our timeline since he's been dead for a long time.

The burial grounds part also have a LOT of runic inscriptions in the ground, and if I recall correctly there was a mission in WoD to get runes from there or something? On that note, there are (obviously) a lot of dead things there, which would help elude to all the use of death and all that.

Just a though, I know I'm at least going to give it a try, wouldn't hurt. Thought I'd bring it up in case it works by some crazy chance.

As far as I know, every single hidden appearance found thus far has been initially triggered somewhere within the Broken Isles, yes even Ret before someone tried to claim it wasn't. Until we find the initial trigger, I really don't think that going outside the Broken Isles will help in any way.

Guys i created an account just to share this theory with you. Please read.

The wardens offer a toy called Syxsehnz Rod, it literally allows you to see the true form of dead night elves in azsura and Val'shara. Judging from what others have posted from LK quotes and involving Night elves this could be a major key. Now with this being said u have to be revered to use the toy, sadly i grinded rep with my DH first so i screwed up for everyone on fact checking, i will check as many spots for ideas but it only lasts 2mins for every 30.
Lastly something that comes to mind is mentioning that the item exists but needs to be implemented this could mean the areas changing at a later time which could reveal key figures for this toy.

I honestly think this could be the answer. If anyone knows of any major NE's that have experienced frostmourne first hand that could be in the area please share. Personally Illidan came to mind so might be connected to him. Hint hint theres huge story line going for him right now. (theres ur fel look). I realize people have mentioned the rod, just felt like this could clear things up.

If someone could confirm this please, I was clearing ICC 25 heroic mode, had just killed saurfang, skipped valithria, and was probably on my way to sindragosa gauntlet, when the letters "n tago" just randomly appeared. It was probably just an addon glitch, but who knows.

I may have found some bread crumbs to the Start or trigger of this quest, but nothing definite.

I was Afking in the class hall by the artifact forge when i heard the Guy that can refund your artifact traits say "Make the weapons better, Corvus! Saronite isn't good enough anymore, Corvus!.. Bah! I'll Show them what i can do to a blade" maybe the trigger has something to do with getting a boatload of Saronite or something?

So at the moment the popular theory is that we get this from Tichondrius, which does make a ton of sense. Nothing wrong with it, it's a solid lore-backed idea. My issue is that now that unholy's appearance has been found, and Arms' (the other unknown one) appearance is solved barring the trigger for Saurfang. So frost is possibly the only spec to have an appearance from Nighthold?

The magnitude of time between everyone else obtaining their appearances and us, is absolutely absurd.

Referring to the Lich King maybe, or Ner'zhul perhaps? We did fight against him and Arthas when claiming the swords, but we never actually fight/disperse Ner'zhul.... Probably tied to our Artifact Level.

I got no clue for this one to be honest. Especially since this ones at the dead spirits that make poison wine... if Frost still had access to The Army Of The Dead then maybe... but I got no clue what this one's meant to mean other than "look at all the ghosts that are in Azsuna." ...Maybe the Court Of Farondis faction is tied to unlocking the skin?

67.31, 58.02 in Val'sharah

Definitely seems to be poking at the Darkheart Thicket dungeon and Nightmare raid... whilst it may not drop directly from any of the bosses in there, perhaps a stage in unlocking it is from killing all the bosses in both of them?

Field Of Fallen Kings in Stormheim

Maybe the Nameless King rare mob has a connection to it? Or kneeling before King Ymiron in the Maw Of Souls dungeon? There are also the Four Kings in the Halls Of Valor dungeon before you fight Skovald...

Something else to bear in mind, is that when the DK's start going to the Broken Isles, the Lich King specifically mentioned hunting down the Dreadlords. Only Dreadlord boss I can locate in the Adventure Guide is Tichondrius himself in the as of yet unreleased Nighthold raid, and I haven't encountered any rare mobs of them either apart from that one guy in Azsuna next to the first questing zone.

Blizzard have shown they're not afraid to make some Hidden Skins be hidden behind some seriously long requirements. Just look at what hidden quest chain it took to get the Corrupted Ashbringer skin... the Runes Of The Darkening could be something similar, requiring perhaps... an Exalted rep with Court Of Farondis, all the bosses cleared in Darkheart Thicket and the Emerald Nightmare, have reached a certain Artifact Level as well...

That or it'll drop off of Tichondrius when the Nighthold raid comes out.

I looked into that hctaz guy... and his achievement history from 29 days ago... since hes not keen on telling anyone...

The ONLY thing that stands out is that he got legion dungeon hero on 09/03/16... about a month ago... ring a bell?

Ive said before i THINK it is referring to each dungeon... this makes me believe that is our trigger before anything else can be done to unlock them... has anyone else confirmed that is NOT the case?

I'm putting my money on one of the world bosses we haven't seen yet. Like The Soultakers for example. These guys will be in Stormheim and they're all about collecting souls, which is what Frostmourne did, and since Blades of the Fallen Prince are made from the pieces of Frostmourne, this makes sense to me.

Something i thought i should mention here is that during the hunt for the hidden ashbringer skin, some people searched naxx and the surrounding area's because of the datamined NPC's Ser Zeliek Dama Blaumeux Thane Korth'azz Gran Signore Alexandros Mograine but as things turned out, these guys had nothing to do with that skin, and those NPC's are still out there somewhere. if i could, i would check around stratholme and where the vanilla naxx entrance was with AK6. unfortunately still only at level 4 with my DK. :(

I like how the community is coming together to solve all these and everyone has some really great ideas, not to knock those ideas but do you think maybe it is a lot simpler than everyone is trying to make it out to be? Blizz did state that all of them would be in the content right off the bat so its not coming in later on and it is also true that for the most part all of it is related to broken isles. So i'm starting to think that maybe it is a riddle of some sort, something that is related to the unique dialog that you are going to have to do in that area. Unfortunately i don't main my frost DK and i am not 110 yet with him but just a thought maybe others could take a closer look in those areas as related to the dialog, something we aren't doing or finding.

Okay guys...So I put together some of your comments and i think I have an ideea...It is most likely not this one but I have given a little thought on it.

So firstly we do have the riddles wich are most likely playing an important role
Secondly WE HAVE the script wich shows 1/1 when kneeling in Lordaeron's throne room

My guess is that each of the riddles lead to one certain place that we must visit in order to trigger something

I am pretty sure this takes after the four Horsemen concept, Kneel before death, might be a reference to the horseman death. Since you have to kneel before where the king of lorederon fell. Yother horseman are conquest, war and famine. Famine might have to do with the night fallen. Conquest can be all of the zones. And war could be between the alliance and the horde. I do appreciate that everyone is working so hard to find it! Just thought I would throw in my two cents :P

Hey im curious here, on the alliance side when you go to muradin withe the Blades equipped he has a special quote for you "What is this blasphemy,<name>?How dare you reforge that cursed blade,the very sword that damned lordaeron and its prince? I did some searching at the place where Arthas threw his heart, I really didn't find anything under there. Even kneeled to the little boy that was down there. Nothing. I was curious about the Ebon Crystal I think it was, but it isn't interactive.

Am I reading right that Frost is the only spec that the hidden artifact appearance hasn't been found yet? Doesn't seem quiet fair to me ;)

People need to stop posting about this;
For the last time, the /kneeling in Lordaeron Throne Room has already been DEBUNKED, it has nothing to do with the frost hidden artifact, the datamined hidden achivement was misread. This is related to A COLOR VARIATION of a FUTURE apparence for the Blades of the Fallen Prince. (the Soultaker apparence, coming in the next patch)

And for those of you not in the mmo-champion thread/discord loop, there is already a new and quite possibly the first SOLID lead, towards obtaining the frost hidden skin, which is related to

Hey guys! I came up with an idea, but i can't test it yet, because my AK isn't high enough and my reputation with Valarjar also low. Can anyone test my idea please?

So people say that the Incisore di Rune Decrepito cannot be interacted with. It's may be gated behind higher AK, but there is a toy named Talismano del Portale della Morte (requires Valarjar revered to buy AND use it). Maybe its nothing, but maybe in this form you can interact with him.

If this doesn't work, i would also try running around Stormheim and searching for while this effect is active.

From hearing the recent lead in regards to Decrepit Runecarver maybe having some involvement, I was thinking that the Mysterious Runestone (Pietra Runica Misteriosa) might be the item you need to trigger a conversation with him?.As far as I'm aware this items purpose still hasn't known. If it has I was unaware but thought this was worth a mention.

Today I've explored a bit and came into a tomb called "tomb of the old kings" in stormheim at the Island in the top right side of the map.I have no idea if this may have something to do with the runes of the darkening but they are 3 things that match.first of all it's a place with vikings who use runes,2nd they are allies from helya and are dead themselfs.third,in the dialogues we got from the lichking he talks about dead,fallen kings and graves. All those things are there,then again. I thought it would have been possible that futhark spawns there somewhere aswell between the elites but I didn't find him yet. what do you guys think about this?

Food for thought: Many of the others require Artifact Knowledge level 6 in order to pursue hidden appearances (Ret Pally, and Demo Warlock for example.) and at least level 5 for others (Warrior, etc.) I think it might play highly into this.

I was looking at the ways to earn the other hidden appearances for the other classes and I discovered that many specs get their hidden appearances in similar, if not the same way, maybe we should look there. I personally believe that if they are linked to the vrykul, the Soultakers (World Boss) drop the runes. If not let's look into the other artifacts to find out possible ways of earning our runes.

Okay, so not sure how helpful this will be

I've just spent the last hour wondering around Shields rest using Skaggl Potabile's to "see" if there isn't anything in the tombs as one of them is called "the icebreakers tomb".

I can confirm there is nothing.

I've also checked the parts of "the lost temple and The Tomb of Sargeras in a similar fashion, nothing.

Most recently been into Helheim to check Helya to see if we've missed something with the potions or if somethings in the water with the potions, sadly no results as of yet but I've still got 70 potions to go through!

If any of you can think of a smart area to check out please comment happy to head off and do it.

So everyone seems so focused on Stormheim. But did we all forget there is another Vrykul settlement in the Broken Isles? One that only Max level players can access? Has no one thought to wander around Jandvik? I'm not AK level anything on my DK so if there's a gate at all, I can't find it. But I think it might be worth exploring.

Just a summary of my week on a social life killing hunt for these. i know many of these have been discussed in here already, but this is my personal work on trying to confirm anything.

Went through to all of the Arthas RP spots with the spirit world drink, dead, and alive to no avail, nothing even
noteworthy.

Ran ICC and got up to Arthas and used the spirit walker pot and searched everywhere.

Searched pretty much all of stormheim with spirit walker pots, dead and alive nothing noteworthy.
Spent a full day searching for ways to spawn or to find Futhark with absolutely zero luck.

searched acherus up and down for any clues, going so far as to compare runes on the map with the runes on the blades or on pages scattered around the hall

My conclusion, after about 40k worth of spirit pots and repair bills, is that its either obnoxiously hard to obtain, or gated in some capacity.

Afterthought - Corrupted ashbringer is insane to obtain including farming and fishing and all kinds of stuff. perhaps because its such an iconic weapon and there are so many paladins. The other most well known weapon is frostmourne, i would argue more so. I feel its not inconceivable to think that we have to do some obnoxious quest that starts with some random item like corrupted ashbringer.

The whole Futharg stuff got me thinking about places where Vrykul (or Vrykul spirits) are present on the Broken Isles. Stormheim and Jandvik come to mind right away, but there is one more place... the Blind Marshlands in Highmountain.

I went there and used Control Undead on each of the undead targets present. The Fuoco Fatuo Piangente was the one that did something strange. Irregardless of where I initiated the control, the wisp would guide me to one of the two entrances of the Highmountain Burial Ground. There were three small yellow stripes above the wisp every time he changed direction. Once you reached an entrance, the wisp stopped running ahead of you and stopped showing the yellow stripes.

I've controlled many wisps so far and kited them all over the Burial Ground, nothing happened. I tried detonating the wisp (an ability which is still available when you control him) at various locations, primarily the bone piles, but nothing happened then either. It could be that the pathing stopped because the World Quest was also active at the Burial Ground.

I'm currently running out of ideas, so I'm posting this here in the hopes that someone else might be able to find out why these wisps guide you to the Burial Ground.

Shot in the dark here guys, but here goes. I just noticed by chance that the skybox turns to night if you go to the Stormwind Cemetary. It then reverts if you go out of it, I know because when I fly to Cathedral square, just outside, it turns to sundown. Runes of the "Darkening", huh? It sure darkens here. I don't know if this also applies to Orgrimmars 'version' of the graveyard though.

Nevermind. It is apparently Stormwind city that lights up, not the graveyard darkening. Elwynn forest turned night aswell, so it's safe to say it's only the city centre.

OK, If you go to the Frost side of Ebon Hold, you will notice there are 3 types of demons there. Maybe those are a hint at something, how to trigger the next step. He is the only one of the old "trainers" that tells us to let him continue his research, maybe once we have killed enough of each of those demons, he will talk to us and that will be our trigger. Even Bolvar told us to kill them, so it makes sense. **Also, Another Note** Does anyone know what this is for, or how to find out what it is for. Here is my stab in the dark:
The recent tweets from devs mention about looking out to the ocean. And everyone started running around out in the water and dying to fatigue. But then there was a followup tweet about looking out to sea was the hint.

So I started following around Marksopp the Tireless since he walks to the edge of Archerus and looks out to the ocean. He makes 4 stops total on his trip:
1) Walks to the edge of balcony, points, and turns around.
2) Walks to an Alchemy station next to the armament work orders and seems to make a potion.
3) Interacts with the chest next to Peggy Burridge. I don't think Peggy is part of the chain directly. That NPC is a tribute to a passed loved one (I assume) of someone at Blizzard.
4) Bangs on the anvil next to Salanar

What I tried:
1) Popped a Skaggkdrynk at the Alch/chest and at the balcony (only bought two). Nothing showed up any different that I can tell.
2) Tired to kill myself in Ebon Hold by dueling an Ebon Blade trainee. I died, but releasing brings you back to life, not a ghost.
3) Ran off the balcony and went in a straight line. Got all the way back to Suamar. Even killed myself and ran back to the Ebon Hold to just see if being dead helped. Didn't see any new quest or item markers on the minimap.

What still may work (maybe)
1) Try this all at a higher AK. I was just AK3 at the time.
2) What's another way to see ghosts? There's some random old Gnomer item, but I can't think of anything else that would allow us to see if there's some dead people in Ebon Hold. I mean, more then normal that is.

Edit: Had another thought to look around Varian's memorial in SW. I assume there is something for Vol'jin as well. Did some kneeling around there and nothing popped up. But again, AK may be a factor. At least for Alliance, that location is by the ocean. Where is Vol'jin buried?

Another thing I've been looking at:

In the "Withered Training" scenario/WQ, there are drops from chests called "Scroll of Town Portal: <Location>"

Each of them has some flavor text, any takes you to a remote Night Elf ruin. I think ALL are by the ocean. at least one has underwater breathing that you can grab with "Slimy Clams".

Any merit there?

Searching through the ocean cause why not, stumbled upon these 3 oversized skeletons with a sword in the middle. Not sure if this has any relevance. Directly west from the Isle of the Watchers. It's pretty far out there and looks somewhat relevant to something. Looks like downed Vrykrul ships around the bodies too. I've got an Imgur but this site won't let new accounts post links.

Okay, so we went through this earlier and some people felt it wasn't a thing, i am now convinced it is.

our class hall shows this on the mission table

No other classes have anything similar in there class halls I've asked and checked with everyone i can speak to.

So the small amount of proof i have to back this up currently there are 2 runes within a close distance to each other in high mountain in the Icehorn area and then a third at 42- 25 which I've found this afternoon.

this is the rune

1st Rune cave :54.25;75.08
2nd Rune cave : 54.93;90.39
3rd Rune Cave : 42- 25

I have tested this with a friend and its clear as they approach the rune it is solid, then when a mob is killed on it it clearly starts to pulse ! it continues to pulse when you leave and come back!

If you look at the initial picture from our class halls it shows the rune in High Mountain and then other such runes in other zones.

I personally can't remember if i saw the runes in other zones when leveling. However i can assume that the runes on the maps are to there respective zones on the map in the initial class hall picture.

Shields Rest has rooms called 'hall of kings' and 'tomb of icebreaker' i litterally kneeled infront of everything i could see. The problem is you need to be in blood to kill the elite mobs! The only thing out of place was there is a Non-elite banging on a door. Does anyone know what this is for?

Guys stop looking in the icebreaker tomb. Thats the tomb of the one that made the protection warrior artifact.
Is called that way because Magnar used cracks in the ice to get inside the nerubian cities, surprising them.

It's amazing that this hasn't been found yet with patch 7.1 quickly around the corner.At the very least someone should have datamined it by now. Did any of the Blizz devs give any clues? It's gotta be more obscure than the Ashbringer hidden look.

So I found something in Stormheim, and near as I can tell it has no other purpose.The exact coordinates are "Stormheim, Field of Fallen Kings 65.2, 40.4". It's what appears to be a circle of stones, and one of them has Nordic runes carved into it.

My wife studies languages, particularly Nordic runes, and she was able to help translate them. As far as we can tell, it's either FWZITH or NWZITH, as far as a direct translation goes. Nordic runes also have other meanings beyond just being an alphabet though. Symbolically, it's almost as if the stone is a protective ward.

This could be nothing, but I haven't seen anything similar in Stormheim. I did try a range of things, such as various emotes and Death Knight spells.

First, let me say what I have done, aside from the obvious that everyone, or at least 90% of us have done. I have spent 12 hours swimming around the broken isles, every nook of it, and all I found that was interesting that didn't have an answer for was a little south of the Waning Crescent, there are 3 jelly fish, and a fish pool on the ocean floor. (maybe someone knows what that is)

I took it upon myself to also swim over ALL of Vashj'ir, as it ties in with the Broken Isles, has everything that would make sense to check. Nothing I could find, though there are of course runes in the zone.

I have also done all of the Northrend, Draenor, Outland, Vanilla, Mysts, and Cata stuff that I could think of, and that was commented on in these pages, the ones that weren't already done to death at least.

Best of luck to you all, and if you have any other ideas, or maybe even a comment on something I may have missed, please let me know. Together this will be found. I am just waiting for the moment when it shows up as something I have already tried, and I can call Blizzard out on their mistake. I have tried many things that I haven't listed here. (I took notes on each thing I did, the AK level I was at, as well as the date. I have 73 pages of shorthand notes and counting. I have my eyes on you Blizzard, my cold dead eyes...)

I also wanted to note, While we may be looking for Futhark for the answer, remember that the item with the flavor text is the consumable. We aren't looking for someone to interpret the runes, we are looking for someone, or something to give us the runes, chances are it will not be a quest, as the quest would have been datamined. Also remember that Darkening is a synonym for Angering, as well as Corrupting, and based on the look, I would definitely say those blades are angry and corrupted. I actually feel like we need to somehow pull the corruption off of something or someone, and that corruption creates the runes. Also keep in mind, it could be worse, we could be the class/spec that no one wants around because our DPS sucks, and... oh yeah... scratch that last sentence.

I personally think we should do this:

1. Concerning the runes, we should stop searching for only vrykul runes. The first look of the blades is green just like fel, that gives me the idea that the runes may be in the hands of the Legion. It would also make sense because if the runes are written in an ancient language no living soul remembers that language may have belonged to one of the worlds consumed by the Legion.

2. We also should stop searching for the questline itself and start searching the trigger, because if we find out what will happen is good but if we don't know how to start it we'll be just like Arms warriors. I just say this because I've seen people search more for the questline than the trigger. That's just what I've seen, if I'm offending anybody with this thought I apologize.

Alright Gents. I'm gonna come out and suggest we pour over the elite isle in Stormheim the one where you get two artifacts already(Prot Warrior/Survival Hunter) the runes that appear on the blades model have been spotted on pillars on the isle(need's confirmation from 2 more sources). Not only that it's also a parallel to some of the text lines provided by arthas(quick summary: lots of dead kings on that island) it's an elite area which makes it less accessible. I checked a few of the tombs myself, but not the full island quite yet. It's related to the Vrykul(imo our strongest lead). It's an island full of ghosts(matches the text on Runes of the Darkening). I'm going to thoroughly explore this weekend. But it seems to draw all the correct parallels. The tombs of the kings themselves seem to be a dead end, but the boats moored in the harbor there even have the same glow in the Eyes as a DK. Please prove me wrong so we can add this to the list of bunked theories.

Possible Discovery: 110 rare mob in Felwood that has lengthy respawn, is located near the quest where you see Arthas and Illidan discuss the Skull of Guldan.

Mob poses no difficulty, killed it in 5s. It drops this scythe for anyone, perhaps you need a 2nd item to repair the "Pair"? Cannot think of any other dual wield scythe possibility apart from maybe a rogue appearance?

So uhhh, has anyone considered maybe the world quest rare Fjorlag, the Grave's Chill may be related? Seems pretty frosty and he's literally in a zone called Field of Fallen Kings with a bunch of rune related NPCs around. Also has a HUGE patrol area.

After wasting about two days following hunches and theories, I tried to come up with something on my own. This may be useless and I'm hoping someone finds the appearance soon so we can all stop theorycrafting, but these are my two cents.

Maybe the appearance has something to do with Ner'zhul, the first Lich King? The guard of the blade bears a slight resemblance to the Shadowmoon Clan's symbol, we saw Ner'zhul in the artifact questline, and we know from Draenor that the Shadowmoon Clan had quite the inclination towards necromancy.

As I said, it might be nothing, but wouldn't hurt to look into it at this point.

Just wanted to warn you, I asked a GM the current location of Arthas's body, and he couldn't answer because of possible spoilers, but he told me that Arthas was in a very special place, because he had much to purge.

We can expect some new about Arthas, the True Lich King in Legion or even later.

Then, I asked Nobbel87, a lore-lover, where could be Arthas's body/spirit, and he answered "In Hell".

I have read almost all the interesting theories in these comments, and I see that most of them are about Vrykul. Now, I don't know well the lore if not wc3 and the famous raids, but I think that "the language that no living soul remembers" might not be the Vrykul's language but the Old Gods' one. Why do I say that? Well, for many reasons:
1- 3 faceless appears in Northrend(2 of them are from Dragon Soul, which is in Northrend tho it is a Cataclysm Raid). These are the General Vezax, which is the Ulduar boss just behind Yogg.Saron or Warlord Zon'Ozz and Yor'Sahj the Unsleeping both from Dragon Soul(the second and the third boss).
2- They speak an ancient language that no living remembers, indeed we understand what they say just because of the whisper they do to our character whenever they speak, and that also fits with the part that says "yet somehow the words leap to your tongue, yearning to be read" and what do we actually do to understand what they say? Exactly, we have to read them and we don't even know how we can understand that.
3- Well, all of you are focusing of the RUNE but actually that might not be the real thing to focus on but the main thing could be THE DARKENING, which I don't need to explain why it might be connected with the Old Gods I hope.
Also, I've read of a guys saying that the image of this item is the same of an Offhand weapon that drops in Dragon Soul, which might confirm further the theory about the Dragon Soul's faceless.

Now, the TRUE question: is it a random drop? I think not, thousands people finishes these raids everyday searching for the mounts dropped from the other bosses, and they would've surely dropped it if it was just a random drop. Does it require some kind of special interaction with these bosses? Yes, I think this is the best option. Maybe there is some kind of secret room like for the Unholy skin? That might be an option, tho I have no idea of where that might be or how we could access it. And for the last, considering that these weapons are very similiar to 2 little Corrupted Ashbringers, maybe we have to do some "mini achievments" like the Retri Paladins.
Now, I'd like to know what do you think about this idea I had some hours ago! :]

EDIT: I just realised that in Ulduar there are the Darkrune Dwarves, so both "the darkening" and the "rune" are there

I noticed something that may be bad news for us.

I was checking out the other ways of getting the other hidden artifacts and I realized something.
For assassination rogues and elemental shamans the item that unlocked their hidden artifact appearance was something that had writings on it, like secrets and stuff (just like our runes), and they both had the same exact way of earning it. And you're not gonna like it.

Its the Underbelly.

They both dropped from a rare mob in the underbelly, guess that means its time for some of us to get in there and try our luck. I volunteer first, I'll start later today.

Just one question then i'll leave ya'll alone... been running around for days now just like everyone else but don't see anything about the Temple of a Thousand Lights in Aszuna.... there's Frostrune Scrolls on the ground that you can use to encase enemies in ice, as probably everyone has used, but every thing around that area is dead, and it fits that it might have something to do with the hidden appearance based off of the flavor text of the item... I don't know though... just an idea

So I don't wanna be a downer or anything, but from the ones I have read of other classes hidden appearances, the flavor text doesn't really tell you much about how you get it so I dunno if focusing overly much on that will help with getting them? Don't get me wrong, I hope it is and someone finds it soon cause would be awesome for frost DKs to actually get a win :D

If you ask me, I'm beginning to think we're looking WAY too deep into this, we're searching for a questline as complex as the corrupted ashbringer one, and I don't think that our dark runeblade has such a deep "questline" as the corrupted ashbringer. Think about it, the reason of why the corrupted ashbringer questline is so long and complex is because it puts together a bunch of myths that came up on how to get the corrupted ashbringer in vanilla before it was looted in the original Naxx. People spent countless hours speculating about this (seems vaguely familiar...) just for it to end up being the drop from a boss. So this corrupted ashbringer questline for the ret pally HAA is basically a love letter from Blizzard to all those who speculated way back when about it. Sealing the case in a better light and referencing events that are part of WoW community history now.

And now looking at our HAA, I don't think its going to be that complex with our HAA as there was no dark runeblade (aside from the corrupted ashbringer) that was speculated about so much on how to earn. Even if the Futhark theory seems complex enough it has so far wound up in many dead ends (sadly).

Considering this I return to my point, we're looking way too far when the answer may actually be staring at us right in the face. So for a while, let's stop searching for humongously complex, Sombra ARG like theories and let's start taking a look at more simple theories, doing this we may actually find our runes way easier to earn that we thought they would be.

My intention is not coming up with a wild speculation but could the runes be tied to archaeology by any chance? I mean getting runes from that profession would make sense... Ofcourse while surveying vry'kul digsites in Stormhiem... If someone has a clue about this theory please let me know.

Each week there's a quest that we get from dalaran regarding archaeology, that sends us to a specific zone. If there's a quest that sends us to stormheim maybe that's how we get the rune, or just from randomly surveying digsites there. Just a thought.

So i was Checking the other Artifact weapons Hidden Appearances and i saw the Protection warrior had to run a Script in order to Start the Event!
Protection:
Hidden Appearance: Last Breath of the Worldbreaker - Unlocked via Burning Plate of the Worldbreaker.
Reach at least Artifact Knowledge Level 5.
Run the following script and if it returns true, the hidden skin 'event' will trigger for you:

Burning Plate of the Worldbreaker was found on the ground in the treasure piles in the upper level of Neltharion's Vault (not Lair) in Highmountain.

So as a foold erand i run some scripts with different numbers and everything was False.. Except for 4 numbers that went True on me!

Whats interesting about this bit aside from the twin swords thing, is that the passage to it on foot is guarded at the front by four Risen Bones, as if its meant to be something... I don't know, I'm just spitballing here about how to get this skin without having to use that bug that's going around.

Ok! so i just thought of something, a game master said at one point that the hidden appearance was attainable at 7.0 BUT was not available to be acquired. SO! As i had learned from fury warriors they need to kill Nithogg... which was a world boss during the first week of world bosses spawning (as well as EN release) So i had looked at the list of world bosses and read their little descriptions! hehe "sent by helya to raid the crypts of noble Vrykul kings, This trio of raiders have found their way into the tomb of the old kings and seek to claim the souls that rest there"

Most if not ALL of the attacks from this world boss (as far as information goes) are void based... hence "the darkness does not die"

Also with how the weapons look in general, they do have a little bit of what looks like ancient highborne craftsmanship, just look at the nightfallen around surumar city and around the area.

Other than this i have NO clue. I mean seriously blizz should just give us a hint already... all but 2 have been found.... anyway enough about theorization i will test it when the boss is actually up. maybe their weapons look like the ones we want? anyway peace~

I have been thinking about where to find this artifact for a long time now. I did think of something. No clue if anyone tried this yet, but I have not heard anything about it before.
I was searching for keywords from the story that Arthas' memory tells. After some searching I found something that could be related to the part where he tells about ancient knowledge only still known by spirits. Also the description of the Runes of darkening says:

"Written in an ancient language that no living soul remembers, yet somehow the words leap to your tongue, yearning to be read.".

What I found was an item that was added in legion called scroll of forgotten knowledge. This item is made by inscripters (which I found extra peculiar, because on the glyps inscripters make are always runes pictured). The reason I think this might have something to do with it is now clear.

But what gives me extra hope is when I searched for comments on the item, people practically said it was useless. That got me thinking that probably not so many people have tried to use it several times (The annoying thing about this item is that you can only use it once a week). If this was a clue it would mean that the Runes of Darkening might be just a rng drop(which I firstly don't hope, but also don't think). So maybe you need to use it on a certain place. Since it's only usable once a week, searching for an answer regarding this item goes very slow on my own. Idk if I am anywhere on the right track. But to me this item seemed very randomly added (I mean it is actually pretty worthless looking at what it gives and how often you can use it. But it might not be worthless to a frost DK).

Ok how have i not seen this. The darkening. I am actually a proud viking beleiver. Stormheim. Its ^&*!ing all stuff based off viking mythology. The darkening was a reference to fenrirs brother. JORMUNDGR aserpert whos venom would darken anyones soul into the the pits of helheim aka hell. The fallen kings are the kings that banded together and died together to defeat jormundgr. Fenrir has 2 sons. Skoll and hati. These 2 beasts take many forms and have always been at eachothers throats. Skoll would take souls to the darkest sepths of helheim. Hati would guide those to vallhaljah. I swear how did i not see this. Arthas dies he goes to helheim for his deads to the vrykul. The fallen kings of viking mythology were the keepers of the hidden tongue grongklus. A hidden language to purge anyones soul from darkness the purest of light. Im thinking that we have to go to helheim. Look for clues of the hidden tongue. We become spirits there. I have seen clues of hidden kings and the ships they rode on to fight jomundgr. Its gotta be there. I swear its gotta be there.

Folks, there is a place in the Runewoods (Stormheim) with an "item" called a RUNESTONE, which isn't aligned with the rest of the stone. We cannot click it. I am 99% sure that this is where we will find this. It's all about runes. Even the mobs there talk about death and runes and stuff. It's definitly there guys. Keep me in touch. (Shikky-mug'thol)

Alright, here goes a Theory my friend and I developed to counteract this Vrykul Rune Carvers, and Stormheim stuff.

"Runes of the Darkening", Written in a language that no living soul remembers, this leads me STRAIGHT to both the Languages of DEATH and the OLD GODS, with that in mind Yogg-Saron is the God of Death("We've done Ulduar it can't be there" Also Dark Rune Dwarves serve him), Hold your horses, and bear with me...
Now... Who is the only Mob in this expansion with a tie to Yogg... the only mob that has not been able to be slain by a Death Knight since Artifact Knowledge was at max 3... That's right! You guessed it, the one and only Mindflayer Kaahrj within Dalaran's own Violet Hold. Now with this in mind, the rotation for this dungeon is completely RNG as to what bosses spawn each week, so I'm hoping to test this theory soon IF he spawns.

Alright here goes nothing. I honestly think people should start considering the old gods as a possibility. Now didnt yogg saron say the he will learn that no king rules for ever? He as in arthas. Im pretty sure thats one of the memories in yogg sarons boss fight. Then when you kill the lich king in icc the ghost of his father says "No king rules forever". But what if that wasnt his father but in fact yogg saron controlling the spirits that were freed when tirion broke frostmourne. I mean he could easily do being an old god and all. Arent old gods like not living or dead? like outside the cycle? Idk but to me it doesnt seem all the crazy to manipulate an event like that for an old god. And we do know that that is what old gods do. They seem to manipulate key events in WOW in their favor. The reason why I think this is all relevant is because what the echos of arthas in the broken isles say :
You exist by his will alone. You imagine yourself to be free, but you will always be his instrument

To me this sounds like arthas realized he was tricked and deceived. realizing that his "wrath" was just a stepping stone for an old god to come to power. I mean just look at the dialogue. to me its very clear hes talking about the old gods. I think these echos of arthas are key hints or requirements for the hidden frost dk appearance. Now in the description of the weapons it says "Written in an ancient language that no living soul remembers, yet somehow the words leap to your tongue, yearning to be read." To me its either the language of the titans which i have no reason to believe its that OR the language of the old gods. I wouldnt have any idea where to start looking but i thought i would post this because we havent found where the weapon skin is and i think people are looking in the wrong places and need to start looking in other places for leads. I just think the whole arthas and dks and ice and lordaeron are to obvious of things. I think if it was something along those lines we wouldve found it by now.

Hi all,
I just saw a deathknight named Stizzozzled on Illidan with the hidden appearance. When i asked him how he acquired the appearance, he said something about doing world quests, pvp kills, unlocking dungeons(?) and unlocking unholy and blood weapons. I couldn't be sure what he was saying exactly, there were many errors in his whispers. But he does have the appearance, he said no one believes him on discord. worth looking into.

The Frost Hidden Appearance has been confirmed by blizzard to be connected to a "World Boss which has not spawned yet." as many speculated. In my opinion, this is complete and utter (Censored). I don't know about you guys, but I am tired of this kind of "RNG". The GM's who said they weren't available, were correct. They weren't... I have a long letter to write, so I will leave it at this.

Everyone, I want to break down a few things.

::Edit:: It appears that the NPC Futhark is no longer in the database, maybe this debunks him as having anything to do with our HAA?

First, we need to stop looking at the runes on the blade. Chances are when the model was designed, no one was thinking of where it would come from.

Second, we need to stop thinking "it's green, it must come from this or that." The color of the original appearance also has little to do with other hidden artifacts appearance location.

Third, people say it looks like this blade, or that blade from <insert boss/location here>. No, it looks like a design someone decided to create because they had a theme to go by and used other items inspiration. It doesn't direct us towards a location for the trigger, at most it hints at a location for the ending, we are looking for the beginning.

Now, what does hint at location from other looks. The design itself. (Example: Polymorph mobs, get a sheep staff.) The skull on the blade doesn't match the old corrupted, nor the new corrupted ashbringer, I am sorry. It does however match perfectly to the skulls found on the Vrykul Ships located in Helheim (Look at the Ship Wheel, or steering wheel, of the ships, some have this exact skull) The Cross Guard is a sunburst, similar, but not matching the one found on Silver Hand items. It does however resemble other sunbursts, such as the design on the tent that the blacksmith that speaks of "the rumors from undercity" about our blade.

For my theory on a trigger, it's simple. Each of the zones that we see the "memory of arthas" in, can be considered a starting zone, they each scale, and we can go through them in any order we want to go. I believe there is either an item to interact with, a mob to interact with, or something of the such in each of those zones. After interacting with each mob/item, (much like the blacksmith making her comment) we unlock the ability to start our trigger. We need to find a pre-trigger in each zone to unlock the actual trigger to the item. We also have the Jilted Lover respond to ours as well as the paladin artifact. We need to find these pre-triggers, then our trigger will come to us.

::Edit:: Does anyone know of an NPC that responds to our weapons in High Mountain? I have been searching, and have yet to find one in this zone.

The reason I believe this may be it, is this. Since AK6, I have ran every old instance in the game, every raid, every scenario. I have covered all of the zones from BC, Wrath, Cata, MoP, and WoD. I have farmed every rune in the game that can be obtained. I have used potions, traveled while dead, spent over 6k in repairs from killing myself in places (before I realized I could just make a macro to unequip armor before I killed myself to save on repairs, yes I am blond.). What I am saying, is I have tried so much, and the only thing I haven't done is look all over the Broken Isles, because I knew others were doing so already. I may just be crazy from this search, but this is my current theory. Thanks for reading this wall of text, and good hunting to you all.

::Edit:: I want to point out another detail often overlooked. Runes, while they have much to do with the DK, are not DK specific. Lore wise Runes are everywhere, they existed in game before DK's and are an influence in many parts of the world. Just because these are runes doesn't mean they will be linked to something "Death Knight". Stop thinking something is a bad idea because it doesn't seem to be related to DK's. The item is not a quest reward, unless somehow that quest has been overlooked in the data mining. It probably isn't a drop. We aren't looking for a questline, we aren't looking for a drop, we are looking for a series of triggers, or possibly a container, but we are NOT looking for a questline.

Don't know if this is connected to the hidden skin. I am AK 5 and was just in heroic maw of souls dungeon and saw a chest called "Crusty Kvaldir Chest". However the group i was in was running fast and bypassed it. I tried looking up on wowhead what it dropped and wowhead had no listings for it. Has anyone found this chest before and opened?

I was jut doing Maw of Souls and it got me thinking something.
In the second boss fight usualy the boss is torturing someone and they slowley die.
What if we have to save certain mob from the boss to trigger HAA encounter ?

The Frost Death Knight item, Runes of the Darkening, is a "tied" to an upcoming World Boss--so likely a drop. The ones that have not spawned yet are Na'zak the Fiend, Shar'thos, The Soultakers, Ana-Mouz, and Humongris.

Apparently Blizzard has finally given us a hint regarding our Hidden Appearance and it is by no fault of our own that we have not found it yet. We have now been informed that this appearance will be found as a result of a World Boss encounter, similar to that of the Warriors, and the reason it has not been found is that we have not yet had the opportunity to fight this boss as it has not spawned yet. So hopefully within the next five weeks we'll have it. Kind of lame way to get it compared to Apocalypse but at least we know its coming soon and we can stop scouring the World of Warcraft for dead ends.

I somehow managed to unlock the 4th (pvp) hidden skin when I got 1000 player kills. None of the other colors are unlocked. I have no idea how. I do have the hidden skin for unholy.

So guys I think the world boss that will be the one that gives our hidden skin are the Soultakers. If you read their description it says that they're getting to the tombs of Ancient Kings, and one of Arthas phrases when you talk to him is

::NEW:: So now we know our Hidden look is gated behind an RNG World Boss. People say it could be this one, and it could be that one, but honestly, no one is sure. We know we are waiting on a World Boss, so please stop speculating which one it is by their description. We don't need speculation now that we know the trigger/drop.

Here is to hoping that blizzard understands that this kind of "Hidden" is not what we want. Most Classes and Specs are disappointed in their Hidden Artifact Appearance unlocks. Even the best of them, such as the Corrupted Ashbringer, failed horribly due to RNG. I believe that the best idea behind future hidden objects in wow is possibly a non-quest based, bread crumb trail of flavor text items. I want to find an item, either through interaction with an object or NPC, or even a drop that isn't sadistically low, that has a flavor text that stands out, that says something which hints to me who or what would respond to it. I believe this hidden look would have worked best by having demonic runes drop off of hidden mobs. After we collected all of them (say 5 or 6 from world mobs) we are informed to go seek out a tome or such that could decipher them. The tome could be from a dungeon/raid boss, or again hidden in the world. None of this should be a quest though, it should be an interaction much like how the Jilted Lover responded. You could get a response from one of the NPC's in your Class Hall, that says "Those runes you carry, they hold a Darkness unlike any I have felt before. I recall a tome written about them somewhere around <insert zone here> maybe it is still there." Which would be your hint to go find the tome in that zone. The tome could then have a flavor text, or be read, and inform you of a place those runes can be used to unlock a "hidden" area or scenario. Make it something that is not so easily data mined. It would give us a feeling of truly seeking out something hidden. Something that isn't hidden behind RNG. It would give a feeling of completion when we finally succeed. I want to feel like I am in control of my destiny, I want to know that my actions can and will make progress towards my goal. I don't want to feel like my personal progress is gated behind RNG. I want to know that it is simply gated behind my ability to play the class, and to decipher the hints. Not behind a random spawn that can take months. I hope you each enjoyed my idea, and if you would prefer this as well, please like this, and maybe we can bring it to blizzards attention. I plan on writing a similar post on the Forums, I will add a link as soon as I do. I just want to clean up the letter before I post it there. Thanks for reading, and if you have a better solution, or your own idea, add it in the comments, so I can add it to the letter on the forums. Let Blizzard know, that we want Hidden things, not Gated, RNG based, Random dumb luck. Thanks again.

One thing that I think needs to be pointed out at this point, at least from what i saw of the statement made, this appearance is tied to a boss that had not spawned yet, that doesn't mean that it is a drop for sure though, it is possible that killing the boss opens up an avenue that was previously explored but didn't pan out because the boss hadn't been killed yet by the player. Not saying this is for sure the state of things but we probably shouldn't write off any of the bosses just because it wasn't a drop and keep an eye out for any sort of new occurrences after having killed the boss.

Okay, so we know these drop from soultakers but does anyone know if there is a minimum Artifact knowledge requirement? Or a level requirement?

I have a 110 death knight with AK4 that I'll be doing this boss with tomorrow, but it'd be nice to know if the runes will actually drop.

Also it'd be nice to know if my level 100 dk can get the runes.

So the skin was finally found, but heres my question. Seeing that it's an ugly green baseline. Can I do the dunges as blood and unlock both hidden colors at the same time? Or separately? I'm confused because the unlock says "do 100 dungeons with a hidden artifact skin" so does the blood one count towards the frost? Lower queues would be cool. I dont think previous expansion dungeons count.

K so just got these ak 14 used all abilities including sindragosa had to make sure to down them all as well because only downing 2 of the bosses gave kill credit but not the appearance

Can confirm that Runes of Darkening can drop from The Soultakers world boss on live realms. I received the item after my first Soultakers kill (today). The item is apparently not a guaranteed drop but appears to be very high drop chance.

Can confirm today, the Runes of the Darkening from from the Soultakers bosses in NE Stormheim, on the little island. Unknown at this time if there is an AK gate to it or not, but it's a guaranteed drop from the bosses, NOT the auto-loot awarded on boss death.

I believe that if you do miss the loot, the Runes will be mailed to your character, but I cannot confirm. Just play it safe and loot everything. :)

The item drops from the world boss "The Soultakers", it is 100%, however it can drop from any of them. You may have to go and loot one that you were not attacking. Hello all, I thought I would share this with you guys since some aren't getting the drop.
I can't say for sure what Artifact level you will need, it looks like 4 according to a lot of people but I cannot say myself,
HOWEVER if you are past 4 and still didn't get the drop go back and kill the Soultakers again. You may not be eligible for gear loot twice but I can confirm that on first try with artifact knowledge 16 I did NOT get it how ever I went back and killed them a second time and DID get the drop. So go back and try again and see if it drops for you! I hope this helps a bit.

The hidden DK Skin just dropped for my alt. He is at artifact knowledge 4 and hasnt done anything significant in endgame yet besides looking for all 4 Arthas visions on the Broken Islands.

Edit: You need to loot the corpse of the worldboss. Its not automatically given to you.

This hidden appearance is a guaranteed drop from the world boss encounter The Soultakers.
The only requirement seems to be that your Artifact Knowledge Level must be greater than four, though it's possible that being Honored with the Valarjar is also necessary.
You do not receive it from the auto loot pop-up upon the bosses' death, you must loot the item from the corpses themselves. Though it also seems that if you forget to loot it, it will get sent to your mail by the Postmaster .
Lastly, your current specialization and loot specialization are irrelevant, I defeated the encounter as Blood and was still able to loot the item.

Just in case it wasn't already obvious, you need to actually have the Frost artifact weapon for this item to drop. I killed the world boss for loot and nothing dropped, then went and did the artifact quest chain to get the blades, returned to kill them again and the Hidden Appearance dropped.

Can be obtained by killing I Ladri d'Anime (world quest, 3 bosses: Capitano Hring, Cacciatrice d'Anime Mevra, Razziatore Jdorn) in Stromheim/Shield's Rest.

The Rune dell'Oscuramento will not drop unless you have completed the quests for the frost artifact weapon Lame del Principe Caduto (starting with Chiamata della Corona di Ghiaccio).

As soon as you have done this quest line and reached Conoscenza Artefatto 4 or higher, they will drop, even if the bosses have already been killed in this ID.
The runes aren't auto loot, so you have to loot the corpses or visit your mail box.

As I'm hunting a hidden artifact appearance that I knew needed items from a few of the World Bosses, I went looking for a rotation list on them and didn't find one. Here's a list based on Wowhead's weekly posts that also includes if a hidden artifact appearance item drops from the boss.

Ana-Mouz has not spawned yet since the release of Legion as far as I can tell. Perhaps she will be like the other Suramar boss Na'zak the Fiend who spawned in addition to Levantus the week of 12/6? It looks like they are on a repeating rotation which means I should finally get The Dragonslayers in just a few weeks :).

World Boss weekly spawns are released on September 20, 2016.

Runes of the Darkening dropped for me today (11 Jan 17 - patch 7.1.5) from the Lich King in ICC 25H.

Spec: Unholy
Loot spec: Unholy
Artifact knowledge: 15
Apocalypse artifact level: 24 (equipped at drop)
Blades of the Fallen prince artifact level: 16 (in bag at drop)

I was conducting my weekly soul crushing ritual of clearing ICC, praying for invincible to drop and when it didn't I returned to Acherus without looking at the rest of the loot. I only realised that the runes had dropped later when I went to vendor the ICC drops. Not sure what to make of this, especially given I am unholy not frost, but have included it here in case it helps.

Contrary to what is stated, I loot the item "Runes of Darkening" on The Lich King at the Citadel of Icecrown in 25HM with a search level of my 24/25 weapon and 34 ranks Purchased (I do not know if it's related). I saw him fall on The reapers of souls The reapers of souls, there are therefore several ways of obtaining this hidden appearance.

Edit: i was at Artifact Knowledge level 15, and I was in my Unholy spec at the time that I acquired it. I went with a Shaman friend, and she didn't even see it on the loot table. I just picked it up automatically.

2nd Edit: I should probably add that I already acquired the Bonereaper's Hook (the hidden artifact appearance for Unholy), and this was my first time at Naxxramas since then. I hadn't done ICC since then either. I heard a rumor that said that after you acquire the hidden artifact for one, then it becomes much easier to acquire the others. I don't know if it's true, but if it is, then my acquiring the weapon certainly supports that point of view.

This just dropped for me earlier today from the Four Horseman of Naxxramas. I've run Naxramas and Icecrown Citadel fairly weekly for a prolonged period of time and just finally got the drop, so it could take a few runs. Aside from the Four Horseman, this item also drops from Deathbringer Saurfang and the Lich King (reported on any difficulty). Happy hunting.

I am a Unholy DK and was farming some Mog gear from Nax 10 man and the 4 horseman droped this. I didnt know what it was because I am not frost spec. So you can get this to drop in any spec and on 10 man nax.

Just got this today (9/19/17). Patch 7.3.0 Dropped from Lich King 25H. Incidentally, this happened while I was killing him for the completion of my long overdue Shadowmourne questline. I do not attribute using shadowmourne to having any effect on the hidden artifact drop chance. It was just a nice coincidence. So I killed him with Shadowmourne, got the hidden appearance, and all the quest goodies from the Shadowmourne quest line. was a good day, lol (already have the Invincible mount from previous runs)

I got this from Surfang's Chest in ICC 25 Heroic, I thought that was the normal way to get it so I didn't screenshot it at the time. Was this a bug? I think it has a small chance to drop anywhere, simular to the unholy apperence that has a 0.02% chance to spawn the orc anywhere.

I got all of the 4 color appearances on a DK that was created during BFA. So it is still obtainable.

I got this drop off Lich King 25 heroic mode during BFA farming. If anyone is wondering, you do not need have the actual artifact weapon to use this item to get the appearance. All you need to do is transmog to one of your legion artifact weapons and then you can use the item to get the appearance. I apologize if this tip was posted already but once I got it, it wasn't very clear how to use it...

Can this item bug out? Because i acquired it today from ICC Saurfang, the whole shbang went off, the animation and all, but the appearance isn't anywhere for me to use. Doesn't even say i collected them in the tab.

Chucked it in the bank because mine kept giving an error message 'Item cannot be used here' despite trying again over several weeks, in Dalaran, tried next to the artifact forge etc. it just didn't work.

This eventually worked its self out after I completed the class hall campaign and also the follow-on Hero's Weapon quest (rewarding the Hidden Potential achievement). If you get the same problem, try holding on to it until then.
