My experience is with Jewelcrafting however I imagine this applies to all the other professions also:

At the start of Legion I decided to drop Jewelcrafting for Mining to pair with my Engineering. After playing with Engineering for a bit and looking at the recipes I decided to change back to Jewelcrafting.

This book will only teach you Legion recipes you have learnt from Jewelcrafting. Any recipes from previous expansions will all need to be relearnt. Any unobtainable recipes will be lost if you unlearn the profession.

As I hadn't begun doing any Legion jewelcrafting quests upon unlearning it the only thing the book gave me was the skill at 1/800.

Just a warning so you don't make the same mistake I did.

Back to doing the old Dalaran jewelcrafting dailies again!

So I learned fjarnskaggl rank 2 on an alt at ~120 skill points.
I unlearned herbalism, learned enchanting, disenchanted some stuff, then unlearned enchanting.
I re-trained herbalism and used this item.
It restored the ranks I had previously learned however did not change my skill points or my proficiency (so 1/75 with rank 2 fjarnskaggl).

IF YOU USE THIS BOOK NO MATTER WHAT YOU ARE GOING tO LOSE!
Seems great! WRONG! If you make a mistake and use this book stop EVERYTHING you are doing and call or open a ticket! I lost 100000+++ gold and hours upon hours upon hours game time, from recipe farming. The first GM I talked to said it was impossible to get my recipes back and the second said that the amount of time expired he could not recover recipes.

Watch out, and buy only one, unlike other books this one and tailoring dont tell you that you have got all the techniques back if you buy them again. And the GM's will not reimburse you, so "screw you" for not reading WOWhead.

"I can totally understand that this would be frustrating, if some of the Books work one way and others another way entirely.

It very well may be bugged, or seemingly player-friendly, in either of these cases though the GM team is unable to assist.

We can certainly feel for you, and we do, gold isn't easy to get so losing it like this sucks for sure, but we are not the Developers of this game. We cannot make any changes to how the game works, or how a particular item in the game works.

Only the Devs can do that, so I would encourage you to either send them a Bug report or a Suggestion with your thoughts on how it works and how you feel it should work.

Right now, this is how they work so we cannot compensate you for your extra purchases.
