For those who dont know what the refence that its probably (and most likely) related to is from Bleach. For those who never heard of Bleach (other than a cleaning agent) is an anime about a guy named Ichigo Kurosaki who is many things but is known as a Shinigami or Soul reaper. He weilded a Zanpakuto known as Zangetsu which (and i apologize that i have'nt kept up to date in the anime in a while) is a part of Ichigo. It has multiple appearances the first is an old man in a black coat with long hair. Theres two others that i know of but wont go into detail about those.

Anyways Id go further into details but ill let you figure the rest of the story on your own. Also again apologies if some parts of my story are incorrect as I know some things have changed over the years.

This is reference to either Zangetsu or Senketsu, from Bleach and Kill La Kill respectively. Hard to tell based on the spelling, it is only one letter off Senketsu, yet is a weapon rather than an armor piece.

Zangetsu is the main character Ichigo's weapon (Zanpakuto, or soul cutter) for most of the series.
Senketsu is the main character Ryuko's living clothing (Kamui, or god robe).

It's perhaps worth noting that "Sanketsu" on its own could be translated as "suffocation" (choking, asphyxiation; lack of oxygen).

This is indeed Senketsu from Kill la Kill, as its name is both most similar to it, instead of the sword from bleach, and to clear some stuff up, Senketsu is NOT an armor piece. I repeat NOT an armor piece. From the Kill la Kill series the Senketsu was made to be a weapon. Even though it may look like a dress, its not an armor piece. Please watch the anime before judging it please.

edit; In addition, from the quest, it implies the weapon is LIVING, not like a spirit, but the actual weapon is staring at the new owner.

Reward from Sanketsu, la Lama Ardente/Sanketsu, la Lama Ardente, which you can pick up after you defeat Azuka Lamafuriosa at the end of the Campagna della Guarnigione: Risveglio/Campagna della Guarnigione: Risveglio questline.

This item is just like Armi Fradice di Sangue, but this one sets their weapon to 655.

It however does NOT change the weapon model your follower is wearing to that of what Azuka Lamafuriosa uses.

Some follower weapons do change models when their weapon ilvl is increased to 615, 630, and/or 645, but those are pre-determined models for that follower.

Still, the perfect follower to give this item to, for lore reasons in my opinion, is Lantresor della Lama.

Likely has something to do with Azuka Lamafuriosa the warlord of the Burning Blade clan.
On one of the Garrison Campaign missions, the ring of blood, you fight her. She talks about how her weapon grows stronger the more it kills, and while Sanketsu is not named specifically, the icon and the weapon she wields look similar. She stuns you before you can kill her and then flees while saying someday, your blood will coat its edge, its only a matter of time. Finally, at the end of the quest line an NPC in your garrison says we will have to watch out for her in the future.

This item can be disenchanted for a Cristallo Temporale even though its not player equipment.

Edit: It can't be disenchanted anymore since 6.1.

Rather than giving it to Lantresor of the Blade, who sadly is no more than a miner in my garrison, I am going to wait for completion of The Steel Has Been Brought and give it to Aknor Steelbringer as he seems like a proper recipient of Sanketsu. Which will also boost his weapon from ilvl 600 to 655.

I know this probably not is a reference to Ichigo's weapon in Bleach, but dang it would have been cool, if it had been a black Katana instead of an axe

Neither anime's use this word.

Bleach's spelling is way off, Senketsu(Notice the "e") is translated as "previous decision".

And apparently Sanketsu means to suffocate, although I couldn't find that translation with google. Too much Kill La Kill stuff.

If you want to see it as an anime reference by all means, you just have to realize that most words were around a lot longer then our current pop culture, not everything has to be a reference to a tv show or a movie, it could be just clever use of an international thesaurus, so to speak.

Maybe they just realized that the Japanese have the coolest words for sword names.

Edit: Nevermind, that's what it means.

Just used on my Fo Sho Knucklebump and it DID change the weapon model but to an ugly staff. Beware.

As far as I can tell there's nothing super special about this item per se, it's just a great follower upgrade item. I ended up using it on Thisalee (the follower you get from the same quest that gives this item) bc most of my followers are already 630+ in the weapon slot.

It's worth noting that you will get legendary follower in 6.1 along with Aknor Steelbringer. Might be worth using on these 2

Was really hoping it would actually be the introduction of real follower items but alas it is only an ilvl upgrade. Going to use it on my new Nolag since he is the treasure farmer I got this week.

All my followers are capped so this item cant be used even for its appearance, too bad you cant apply the model like a Follower transmog of sorts. At least then it wouldn't be a useless bank item that wont get to serve a purpose anytime soon. I really think they intended this as much for its model as an actual weapon upgrade. Even early in the expac it wasnt that much of an actual follower upgrade. Clearly this could have been a follower weapon model change, im not sure why they didnt see this ahead of time.

Really really disappointed that we have to waste this awesome blade on a follower. Blizzard totally could have had it for a class's artifact weapon in Legion.

A Japanese orc (杏花=Azuka) with a Japanese sword called Sanketsu (酸欠=Sanketsu). The kanji used in "Azuka" means "apricot flower"; those used in "Sanketsu" means "lack of oxygen"...

(Contrary to several comments left across the Sanketsu pages (and even on this page alone), the kanji used in "Sanketsu" ( 酸欠 ) means "lack of oxygen", specifically, not "suffocation". "Chissoku" ( 窒息 ) is the Japanese word for "suffocation". Yes, the two words are related, but they are not the same or interchangeable.)
