The name "Bastard Sword" comes from the fact that it is halfway between a one-hander and a two-hander. In standard swordmaking, it is smaller than a normal two-hander but larger than the average one-hander, and thus the wielder generally wields it one way or the other based on his own comfort level. "Bastard" implies that it is the offspring of these two types of sword. Obviously, in Warcraft case, everyone wields them as two-handers. Interestingly enough, in the Baldur's Gate series of PC RPG games, it is the opposite, wherein they are one-handed swords.

This sword is gr8 if you wanna make a lvl 1 Paladin or Warrior twink, just enchant it with Crusader or sumthin ^^

This weapon has the most dps of any weapon a level one can wield.

I just enchanted it with Crusader for my Hogger raid.

Although this might not be the case, this reminded me of Jon Snow's sword from "game of thrones", longclaw, which is referred to as the bastard blade because it is too long for a 1 hander but too short for a 2 hander, as someone mentioned above:)
