The Scaredy-Cat's Guide to Plunderstorm - Reaching 40 Renown Even If You're Bad At PVP

The fastest way to get Renown in Plunderstorm is to
kill other players, and win
. But what if you're like me: A big scaredy cat who's terrible at PVP? I maxed out my Keg Leg's Crew Renown days after Plunderstorm was released without winning once. More importantly, I enjoyed myself while I did it. So here are some of the best strategies to earn Renown even if you can't survive most fights to save, well, your life.
On average, I make 400-800 Renown a match. Sometimes if I'm lucky, I make over 1000. On more than one occasion, I've even reached level 9 and made over 1000 Renown - once even making it all the way to second place -
without defeating another player in the entire match
. Obviously this is nowhere close to the 3000+ Renown you can make from winning a match, but if you don't enjoy, or aren't good at, PVP, that doesn't mean you have to slowly chip away at 40 levels a tiny bit at a time.
First Things First: Understanding the Basics
Plunderstorm is extremely simple compared to the rest of WoW, but it's important to know the basics, and not everything is immediately apparent in-game.
For example, while there are no addons in Plunderstorm,
you can still change your keybindings
. Changing the interact binding to a button on my mouse immediately made it a lot easier for me to pick up spells quickly. The lobby before the match starts is also a good place to test your keybindings and get comfortable with them.
During a Plunderstorm match,
Renown comes from Plunder
. The more you pick up, the more Renown you earn. This means you want to pick up
all
Plunder that you can grab, and take
every
opportunity that you have to safely pick up more. This might sound obvious, but you'd be surprised at how many people ignore small piles of Plunder or other Plunder sources, and how much you can earn if you're more thorough.
In Plunderstorm, you always start out at Level 1, and can reach a maximum level of 10.
Even if you have no intention of fighting other players, it's worthwhile gaining level
s - it makes killing NPCs faster, and it can even scare off other players - and help you survive attacks for longer.
It is extremely important to be able to recognize chests, so that you can target what you need easily.
Golden Chests drop gold, Magical Chests drop spells, and Supply Chests drop items.
It is astonishing how many golden chests I come across even in areas where players have clearly been.
Finally, and I'm just checking that everyone knows this, while the lobby forces your camera to be really close,
you can zoom out
further once you're in a match. You don't have to play the whole game with the camera that close to you.
Priority One: Finding Some Good Landing Spots
Do not underestimate the benefit of a good landing spot.
Your first priority in any match is to finish your Captain's Orders quest
, since that's worth 250 Plunder, and the better your landing spot, the easier that will be.
The objectives for this quest can be any one of the following:
Collect 30 Plunder
Open 2 Chests
Collect 3 Spells
Kill 2 Elites
Kill 10 Creatures
Obtain 2 Items
This means that
you're looking for an area that can generally be relied to have:
At least 2 Elites
Plenty of smaller enemies
Several chest spawn points
Don't be afraid to shop around for a spot, or to have a few favorites.
While it is possible to glide your parrot completely across the map to a favorite spot, the longer you take to land the more time you're giving someone else to get there first - it's better to have a few options and then choose based on where you're coming from.
Land, Grab, & Quickly Assess
Your first spell comes from your first kill, and elites always drop spells.
So if you're not sure you can down an elite quickly right at the start, you'll want to land on top of one, as this will kill them immediately, and pick up the spell they've dropped. Alternatively, you can land on top of an NPC near the elite, pick up the spell, and then kill the elite for another one. This is another reason to be familiar with your landing spots - you need to be able to down an elite every time, and it's also good to be able to quickly change your target if you see another player reaching your elite first.
From here, quickly assess.
Are you mostly alone, or surrounded by other players? What is your quest, and do you have what you need around you to finish it? What ability did you get from your elite?
If, for example, you've been given the quest "collect 2 items", but there are no supply chests around, (supply chests drop items), but there are a lot of other players and they all seem to have

already, it might be more worth your while to abandon the match and start over. It's your call.
If you're alone and you haven't finished your quest, do that first. If you're alone and you have finished your quest, clear the area - prioritizing things like golden chests and magic spells, but also kill any NPCs and pick up any gold.
If you're
not
alone and it looks like there's going to be a fight, your priority is probably to gather whatever spells you can and do your best to outlast your rivals - remember, everyone is very squishy in the beginning so even if you're hopeless, you can still win just because you picked up something like
Turbinio di Fuoco
and/or
Tempesta di Vento
early on.
Dead Pirate Walking
Once you've completed your quest, you
can
run into the storm, die, and start over, but it's a tactic that gets mind-numbingly tedious very quickly. There are much more rewarding and interesting ways to die.
One option is to just run across the map, picking up any piles of gold you can see, until you're inevitably killed by a player. If you've already resigned yourself to your death, then a fight against another player isn't necessarily something you plan to win, but it can still be fun. But remember,
always prioritize picking up plunder before anything else, even dying
.
For example, in one match I had terrible offensives but I did have
Forma da Silfo
. I'd already decided I wanted to end the match, so I ran up to some high level players who were fighting. One of them died as I got near, and I was just able to nip in and pick up a considerable amount of gold before the other player killed me.
Letting players kill you instead of the storm has a few benefits, especially if you're playful about it. Just because you know you're going to die, doesn't mean you have to make it easy - see how long you can last, or how many hits you can get in before the inevitable sweet release of death. And you might be surprised - I've won fights I never thought I possibly could. I've had players who I thought would destroy me give up and run away. But when I do die to another player, and I've given them the best fight I feel capable of (even if that's a nothingburger of a fight to anyone serious), I quite enjoy the fact that I've dropped loot for them as a little reward.
But just because you've resigned yourself to death also doesn't mean you have to die early, or powerless, or poor. While I've done that running straight across the map thing now and then, I find it a lot more rewarding to focus on being, well, let's face it, a cowardly little scavenger.
Be a Scavenger, Keep Moving & Hug the Storm
It is astonishing the things that people leave behind for just anyone to pick up. While players might kill any elites or open any particularly impressive-looking magic chests, there are usually tons of low-level NPCs near the edge of the storm, and quite often, a surprising number of golden chests as well. You can often pick up abilities - especially if you come across dead players. Areas with buildings can often be particularly great, because there's plenty of hiding spots in case another player comes by, but it's never a good idea to linger too long.
Getting caught in the storm
hurts
, so a lot of players do their best to avoid it. But I find hugging the storm extremely closely, risking the danger areas, and even dipping in occasionally can be rewarding. One thing that many players don't seem to realize is you can still pick up fallen Plunder in a storm if you're quick enough - including looting golden chests and grabbing Plunder that drops from players who die the storm. Just remember, the storm moves faster in some places than others.
Finally, killing NPCs is extremely worthwhile,
even low-level NPCs
. So many players ignore them almost completely, but they reward both Plunder and experience, and the value of this combination cannot be overestimated.
In a recent match, I made it all the way to #2 without trying to climb the rankings at all. In fact, I didn't kill a single other player, but I had reached level 9 - purely through killing NPCs and gathering Plunder. Unfortunately, I hadn't even gathered decent skills, so when I realized the storm was closing in and there were only 4 players left, I ended up sitting in a cottage awaiting my fate.
I even forgot to heal up before the inevitable fight.
That's
how bad I am at PVP.
The Coward's Arsenal
To be honest, you can read as many tier lists and ability explanations as you like, but it's also important to get a feel for the spells yourself. Don't be afraid to experiment and learn what works well for you. Plunderstorm hasn't been out for even a full week yet and we've already seen hotfixes to spells, so ultimately the more you've gotten to know the abilities for yourself, the better you'll be at using them
and
defending yourself from others who use them.
But for the escapist, you'll want a combination of spells that slow the other player down, spells that allow you to get away, and spells keep you safe from CC. Some examples of good spells:
Forma da Silfo
is one of the best getaway spells - not only does it make you run fast and far, it can be used to break being CC'ed, prevents further CC, and reduces damage taken.
Respinta
prevents all CC and damage while casting, and it also silences and knocks back other players - making it possibly the best defense against
Turbinio di Fuoco
.
Tempesta di Vento
is a full stun - which can really help when things are feeling overwhelming, because it can give you a second to breathe. And, of course, it also gives you a chance to run away.
Dissolvenza in Ombra
fades you into shadow and teleports you in the direction that you're moving - though once you're in the shadows, if your plan is to fully escape, it can be a good idea to switch directions or duck behind a good hiding place, since your enemy will likely still be looking for you.
For offensives, obviously if you get the chance to pick up

you probably want to take it, but otherwise there's a lot to be said for spells that are easy to weild, or that you personally find you're good at using.
Bomba Stellare
can be very powerful but that's not going to help if you can't actually hit a player with it, while
Freccia Brinosa
isn't as powerful (
especially after the nerf
) but at least you're pretty much guaranteed to hit your target.
Cumulo di Neve
slows down other players, which I find can sometimes throw someone completely.
Trappole d'Acciaio
is very popular, but - and this is anecdotal - personally I find so many people use them, a lot of players already know exactly how to avoid stepping in them.

Finally, the many uses of items should not be slept on. These are some of my favorites:
Meccanomoto
is my favorite. On one of these, you can go fast and far, and they can be amazing for getting out of a tight spot.
The
Bomba Fumogena
can provide cover to get away, though sadly it doesn't last very long.
Razzi Colla dei Goblin
drastically slows down enemy players and can really be great at stopping them in their tracks while you make your escape.
Pollaio
is basically useless against extremely experienced players, but it is astonishing how many attacking players will completely lose their head when they suddenly find themselves surrounded by angry chickens. It's also very funny, which makes it one of the best abilities in my opinion, meta be damned.
Imbarcazione a Prova di Tempesta
increases movement speed and protects you from damage in the storm, which can be a godsend if you have a particularly bloodthirsty player following you into there.

In Closing
When I first saw that 10.2.6 was a mini Battle Royale, my heart sank. I'm terrible at PVP and Battle Royales have never appealed to me. But even though both of those things are still true, I am 100% a convert to Plunderstorm specifically, and can't recommend at least trying it out strongly enough. Picking up a handful of Plunder before running into the storm over and over again is never going to be fun, and as I've found myself, it is still entirely possible to have a great time without seeking out PVP or actively trying to win. Instead of a Battle Royale, think of it as a survival game, where the object is to gather as many resources as you can and last as long as possible.
That said, there are some improvements that I think could make the early game a little more rewarding for everyone - like a brief period in the beginning where it's not possible to kill other players, or fewer players per game so that there's more map to go around. More incentive to stick around and survive a match for longer could also be a good idea, such as respawning chests, new quests, or even a small amount of Plunder rewarded every time the storm moves in. Blizzard have already made adjustments to this game mode, and I hope they keep working on it and improving it as time goes on.
In the end, while PVP will never really be my thing, I'm also honestly tired of world quests and world events like the Azerothian Archives or boss rare farms like the Hearthstone event. Plunderstorm is the most fun I've had in Dragonflight for a really long time. So while the best way to play and earn renown in Plunderstorm
is
to simply git gud and win, I hope this guide helps others to find the enjoyment (and earn the rewards) that I have.
